News – 7th May 2015

Hi all.

Just bringing to your attention, some of the events and reminders of what’s happening at Malvern…

PINK DAY

On MCC’s family day our girls will wear Pink socks and the S/L will wear pink laces for breast cancer.

The girls have already collected their money but the S/L boys need to donate $5 for the laces which Karen will collect ASAP.

Get on board to respect this worthy cause.

Barrow of Booze

Tickets are available for this annual fundraiser for the club.

Make sure you see Gaz for tickets and why not take them to the game and sell them to the opposition? (hint: maybe before you beat them..)

 Coaches corner

Make sure each week that all players get back to hear the wrap up of the day’s events from U11’s all the way to S/L.

Remember when you were a junior and a senior player gave you the ‘time of day?’

Lets keep and build on our “Club Spirit” as it’s the easiest thing to be a part of.

**ATTENTION: Junior Coaches and Managers**

Can we all please make sure that all of our Junior teams are attired in the correct manner.  Malvern teams are required to wear our Malvern Playing Top, Black Shorts and Black Socks.

In the case of combined teams where uniforms are alternated we as

Malvern Players are still required to wear Black Shorts and Black Socks.

This is a Lacrosse Victoria directive and I would appreciate if all Malvern teams could comply.

Black Socks will be available from the Club early next week for $8 per pair.

Regards to all and keep up the great work.

Gus.

Fundraising BBQ’s at Bunnings and Masters

Please see Tarryn Suffolk for the upcoming BBQ’s we have booked for this year. If you can help out on any of these it would be much appreciated.

State League

Defeated Camberwell 10 to 5

Down to 13 players and only 7 short sticks due to injuries and players “away” on a hot day sent most of the plans for what we wanted to do especially in attack out the window. We started the day by turning the ball over with 8 silly unforced errors in attack and the 4 to 3 score at the main break flattered us against a good and pretty tough opponent, we do continue to put our defence under pressure with those turnovers and it is something we will work on at training.

The good news was we turned it around in the second half managed the ball really well and went on to a pretty good 10 to 5 win in the end.

Full credit to the fantastic hard gut running, great short stick defence and combined with 20 tough contested ground balls of Toby Exton, how he hasn’t got a single vote from the zebras in the last 2 games simply defies belief.

Also terrific to see Patty McGrath getting on the scoreboard with a couple from 12 meters that hit the top corners at serious pace, l doubt anyone in this country has a harder shot and hopefully his shooting confidence is now sky high.

More good news is important players come back into the selection mix this week and a hard week on the track refining our patterns and a focus on not turning it over should put us in a good place for next week.

We have Williamstown at Williamstown this week and l have never coached a Malvern team in a win against them anywhere.

l would love to even that ledger just a tad.

DIVISION 1

Finally Div 1 post their first win for the season after a ‘unsettled’ start to the season.

Out at MCC on a beautiful Melbourne day, the planets aligned and things went click !

All over the ground, players did their bit and played unselfish lacrosse and stuck to the TEAM game.

Good talk in defence and controlling the flow of the game in attack it was great to finally shake the monkey off our back!

Now to start our drive to make finals and it all begins tomorrow night at training!…

See you there

Next game: Footscray at Home

DIVISION 3

Malvern’s division 3 side played Melbourne University on the weekend and lost by 4 goals.

Melbourne Uni started well out of the blocks and had 4 goals on the board before we scored 2 goals one each from Rod Finnigan and Anthony Bosisto.

The 2nd quarter was even with Anthony Bosisto scoring 1 goal to make it 1 goal apiece.

The 3rd was even as well with Geoff Finnigan scoring 2 goals to make it 2 apiece.

Come the last quarter and we had our chances but failed to score and allowed 2 in.

It was a great effort against a much younger and fitter side but unfortunately not being able to finish cost us the game. Final score Malvern 5, Melbourne University 9

Best Anthony Bosisto, Rob Lowe, Darian Panter and Geoff Finnigan.

Goals Geoff Finnigan 2, Anthony Bosisto 2, Rod Finnigan 1.

Next game: Eltham at Caulfield

Women’s B Grade

This week the team took on Williamstown at their home ground, a venue where we had never beaten them and with team Captain Sarah Bown out injured looked to be a big challenge.

It was an evenly contested first half and whilst we were beaten for ground balls by a more determined Willy, with the aid of a strong defence led by Bruiser making some great saves along with Ivy, Nina & Tarryn rotating thru the D we were able to build a 3 goal lead at half time with the scores 8 – 5.

Our shooting practice was finally paying dividends with our goals to shots ratio very high. Romy who was playing as a forward due to illness scored 5 goals in the first half with singles to Kate, Tara & Eleanor.

At half time we spoke of the importance to contest the ground balls, to block our opponents at the face off, block and turn (no checking or swiping), talk and covering cutters in D all of which were taken on board in the second half. Whilst we were starting to tire everyone fought hard and with the D continuing their great form from the first half we were able to withhold everything Willy threw at us and won 13 – 5, our first win at their home ground.

Second half scorers were Tara 2, Romy, Eleanor & Kate 1 each.

It was a great team performance with everyone contributing and it was pleasing to see the way we fought for and won the ground and contested balls in the second half. Our cutting and finding space was great and we created some good scoring opportunities.

Kate & Tara won most of the face offs and fought hard around the ground all game and it was great to see Kate dodge, beat her opponent and score on her left, the result of many hours practice (now we just have to do it every week!)

Once again our “Mosquito fleet” (Sarah, Emma & Brooke) led the way with some great contested ground ball possessions and their run with the ball.

We need to continually work on our general skills, ground balls, shooting and fitness but if we play every week with the same intensity, desire and teamwork we will be hard to beat.

Under 17

Won V Altona  14 – 6

It was always on the cards that this was going to be ‘another’ tough gig.

8 players available against a team that was renown for playing ‘hard’ lacrosse.

We rolled the dice and told the coach that we only had ‘8’… and left it at that.

We would wait to see what he would do…

We knew where we stood, when ’10’ players took to the field..  Giddy up!…..

My orders? Keep it wide and let them come to us!

Up until 1/2 time, we played 4 zone in defence everytime the ball turned over and ‘2’men down in attack when we gained possession! The umpires rectified that for the 2nd half which made it slightly better.

Not ideal game situation, but I was proud as the boys rallied together and fought hard all day!

‘Chappy’ once again took up his place in goals and held his own against some good shots from the opposition!

Wait till he gets a chance to hit the field, he’s going to blitz!

Max ‘The Smiling Assassin’ was at his usual best stripping players and intercepting the ball like it was on a string.

Harry is finding his ‘niche’ with quality checks and booming voice making the attackers think twice about taking him on.

Alex chased hard all day and hunted for the ball as soon as it hit the deck coming up trumps.

Thomas showed us that he has the goods to be a dominant face off player as he tangled up their guy with tricks he might have picked up from his Dad maybe? (We believe in you Thomas so go for it!)

Fintan ‘the destroyer’…runs and runs and runs and then if you get in his way….you’re just a speed bump he has to pass and you come off 2nd best!

Aaron is fine tuning his eye and had some nice shots (even when his dad said hold it out!) finishing with a ‘lazy 7’ who also did his share of running this day.

Jake is our ‘wheels’ who got the ball out of defence and ran it up to attack and played an intricate part of this teams success!

All in all, it will go down as I game I remember when team mates stuck together and never gave up!

They are believing in their ability and I couldn’t be happier for them..

Special thanks to the supporters and parents who came out and for Joey umpiring.

Also to Danny and Tim, thanks for coming out to support your team mates!

We look forward to your return. Imagine what we can do when we have 12!

Lets not rest though, as we have more tough competition coming up!

Exciting times ahead!…Watch this space

Under 15

VS Footscray 18-11

We had a slow start to this game, only our second for the year. The boys are still working each other out and I am still trying to find the right balance for the team.  During the second quarter we started to get it right.  Plenty of hard running through the midfield saw us slowly take control of the game.  A dominant third quarter set the game up and we came away with the win. Well done boys

Under 13

A lot of fun.

Alex and I are working together well with the combined Melvern u13 team.  Chadstone was simply bigger and more experienced, and the beat us solidly.  and we need to designate a goalie.  I think Freddy Forster was best on ground, but would you expect me to think anything else?  To be sure, Freddy ran very hard all day, Justin was one of our best players, and the Joe from MCC was our ground ball king.  We  need to designate a goalie.   At one point we double teamed a Chadstone attack player, and he still broke loose and scored a behind the back goal from the crease.  Hard to beat that, but we had a lot of fun playing.

Next game: Caulfield at Caulfield

Under 11 Black

U11 Blacks headed out to Caulfield for what was to be our first game after the lightning rounds and gradings.

All the kids had the correct uniform, were enthusiastic and warming up by 915am for a 930 am start. (fantastic)

Initial observations were that we were playing against a side smaller and rawer in size and talent, and right from the outset this proved to be the case racing out to a 5 goal lead 7 minutes in.

The blacks played the game in the right spirit given the opposition being played against on the day, however each training session and each game is also about personal development for each player regardless of the circumstances.

The teams ground balls were good and combined with some good cradling and run we moved the ball well.

Catching and throwing at this age bracket is work in  progress, and a concerted effort has been made at training to now develop this area of the kids game further.

A big thanks to Anita Arnold for scoring, and our two referees Mike Naughton and Lachie Bown.

A great even spread of goals and assists.

F/T – Malvern Blacks 21 – Caulfield 2

Adam Barnes

Next game: both Blacks and Reds at home v Eltham.

Under 13 Girls

The combined girls ventured out to play Newport where they met up with some ‘top age’ competition.

The score line of 4 – 15 didn’t reflect on the way the girls played as they followed direction and gave as good as they got.

With our ‘willing’ Goalie getting a constant barrage of shots from older opposition, her game will only be stronger towards the end of the year.

The girls continue to improve each week and their work on their basic skills is starting to pay off.

Under 15 Girls

Once again the girls who had some U13’s join them to make numbers, faced Newport.

The girls ran, chased, attacked and defended against Newport and the coach was very pleased especially with their 2nd half as their defence stepped up and gave the opposition some grief.

Taking the scoreline away,(3 – 14)  it was a pretty even affair and the only thing that split the 2 teams was their goalie, as she was very experienced in the net.

All in all, a great effort from all girls!
