Round 3 done and dusted and round 4 is now the focus at the club.
To say the least round 3 was not the best results for the boys but the girls continue on their winning way and sit on top of the ladder.
No Juniors last week due to Anzac Day speaking of which I would like to blame the Collingwood Football Club for our performances in the Men’s last Saturday.
Every time they win on Anzac Day we have a bad one.
On the other hand I could also blame the Essendon Football Club as every time they win on Anzac Day we have a good one.
We got beat in all of our Senior men’s last week but very positively we have seen our bench marks.
I was fortunate enough to watch 2 quarters of all senior games last weekend and I can confidently report we are looking good. We are working hard at MLC and we will step it up a touch and continue to learn and improve as the losses incurred can always be turned around in the back half of the season.
It was very cool to watch Div 3 last week with the attempted reformation of “The Band”
We got Brad Skepper, Faz, Tim L, Bossie and almost Paul Cook but Cookster got the flue and was unable to play. We may get “The Band” back together next Sat.
I received an e-mail from a guy called Daryl Parsons a couple of weeks ago.
Daryl is Robert Coldstream’s grandson and if you look around the walls at MLC you will see Robert Coldstream in many of the photos back from the 20s and 30s.
Robert or Bob Coldstream as he was known was a very Instrumental person at the Malvern Lacrosse Club as well as Lacrosse Victoria and Australia.
Daryl has so much of our history in boxes in his garage that he is now sifting through so that MLC can retrieve the artefacts’ that Daryl has had in his garage for years.
It was “Amazing” to chat with him for a while as Daryl has a great recollection of what went on at MLC in our very early days and how some of our Traditions actually came about.
I have invited Daryl to our Past Players and Friends of Malvern day on June 20th. Daryl now resides in Brisbane and if any of our members have some frequent flier Points you would like to part with we can fly Daryl down from Brisbane for this day.
Let me know if you can help with this chance to broaden our knowledge of our club.
Coaches and Players keep working hard on the track look ahead not behind.
Regards to All Gus.

Footscray – Loss 15 to 8
After a couple of relative easy wins and holding Caulfield to 1 goal and Eltham to 3 and a great feel around the team our first real test against last years grand finalists and 2013 premiers was always going to be a sharp rise in tempo and skill level required and unfortunately we were not able to go with them when the first whistle went.
I have coached these boys for a few seasons now and if we are flat in the warm up we seldom recover against top sides and this was certainly the case on Saturday.
I’m not sure why we feel we almost need to see what the other team brings in the first 10 minutes before we react but all top teams we encounter will and have buried us in that time if we are slow out of the blocks. Our starts and on field leadership needs to lift from all players and recognise if we are playing stacks of defence we cant force the crease with poor and dropped passes 1 minute after we get it back.
Our decisions in general need to be better to get the game back on our terms when we get our turn with the ball.
There will be changes in State league this week and players will be sent back to Div 1 with specific instructions and what they should work on as the club has an extremely healthy list to pick from and with 2 more great quality U.S players arriving in the next month and apart from some arrangements made and agreed to by me at the start of the season with a couple of players regarding training the free ride is over.
My votes went to Gal, Shepherd, Roo, Fish, Lilburn and Toby Exton who must have been exhausted Sat night after playing 3 quarters of the game in defence including 7 man down situations that holding them to 15 was actually pretty impressive .
Having said all that Footscray were terrific in valuing the ball and hats of to them for reminding us where we need to get to… But I am extremely confident we have the talent, players and desire and WE WILL BE BACK !

Division 1
Unfortunately Division 1 lost a game that should have been a win.
The basic errors that were made can be fixed by attendance at training.
This team has the potential to make and ‘shake’ the final 4.
With experience and youth as our structure, once we capitalize on this, a lot of teams will be caught off guard.
A big thanks to Pauly “Hey Bro” for stepping in the cage for us while Jay was unavailable.
Also to Cam Mc for playing with cracked ribs, who is taking some time off to mend. We look forward to seeing you again once you’ve healed.
With more players available this week, we should have a better spread and start our run to finals…

Women’s B Grade
The team took on Newport at the Town Hall for our first Home game of the year and got off to a good start with Romy scoring in the first minute of the game.
Newport were a very young team who ran hard in transition and it was only great D from Nina, Tarryn & Ivy together with some great goal keeping form Bruiser that prevented Newport from making the most of their scoring opportunities. Goals from Tara and Sarah Bown and another to Romy gave the team a 4 – 1 buffer before Newport scored to make it a 4 – 2 half time lead to Malvern.
Newport opened the scoring in the second half and at 4 – 3 Malvern were looking “shaky”, Newport were harder at the ball and once again were well held by a “tight knit” defensive unit. Malvern created a number of opportunities to seal the game but poor shooting kept Newport in touch. Sarah B and Tara who were both on the forward line due to injuries scored to allow the team to run out 6 – 3 winners in what was certainly not a convincing win (but a good birthday present to Ivy!)
Our basic skills need to be continually worked on with shooting and fitness a priority.
Special mentions to the Defence (Bruiser, Tarryn, Nina & Ivy), to Sarah Bown who ran hard all day despite being inconvenienced by injury and to Sarah and Emma Davie our Under 15 girls who are also playing Seniors and in only their 3rd Senior game really stood out for their hard running, determination and competitiveness. They were rarely beaten on ground balls, ran hard both ways and played great defence particularly matched up against some bigger opponents. Their confidence and improvement is growing every week.
Thanks also to all players involved in marking out the ground on both Saturday and again on Sunday (due to the rain).
Division 3
Division 3 finally had a proper game, coming up against Caulfield and it turned out a hard fought contest with no more than 2 goals difference through the whole game. The midfield dominated the faceoff all day with Brendan Farrell winning more than 90%, but the forwards failed to capitalise. All credit to Caulfields defence for holding out for only 7 goals from about 30 plus shots.
The defence held firm all day to keep Caulfield to only 9 goals. As a team we combined well but failed to finish off against one of the competition leaders. Final score Malvern 7, Caulfield 9.
Best Mitsopoulos, Skepper, Farrell, Lowe, Bosisto.
Goals Finnigan 2, Bosisto 2, Farrell 1,Laidlaw 1, Lowe 1.
Div 3 Next week is our home game.
It has been confirmed and approved by LV to be at Caulfield Park Main Oval.
Please can all players check availability and let Kon or Rod know thanks
U/13 Girls
Defeated Williamstown 11-10
This week saw another couple of additions to the mixed club U/13 team with some brand new players coming down to have a game, with a full bench of girls who were fairly new to the game it was chaotic at times and difficult to ensure we had the correct amount of players on the field! Big thanks to Leanne Currie for her assistance of running the bench!!
It took the team three quarters of the game to start to figure out what they should be doing and how each other play, going into the last quarter we were only two goals down so we made some strategic moves, putting Meg into the forward line and Brooke running the midfield, Paige took control of the defensive line running forward to make lots of intercepts and scooping up ground ball to clear back to our midfield. Brianna was crucial with her fight for the ball and Zoe played an excellent first game, Well done Zoe!!
Meg ended up with four goals for the day and took us to victory with two left handed goals late in the last quarter coming from some excellent transitional team play.
U/15 Girls
Defeated Williamstown 9-7
A great game for our U/15 girls, Brooke played her second game for the day and was excellent defensively, coming up with every contested ground ball and making some fantastic intercepts. Sarah made fantastic position and made some excellent cuts in front of goal, Emma was all over the ground and dominated much of the play, also scoring a goal, Well done girls.
**Special congratulations to Trav & Ams on their wedding day last weekend. They’re now off on their honeymoon and we wish them all the best!!
**A big thanks to Norm Coleman for sharing this early picture of him in all his splendor.
He did look like a ‘force’ to be reckoned with.. ; )

Following the withdrawal of a team from Division 3 last week, the Division 3 fixture was redrawn late last week. The new fixture is now available on line. Lacrosse Victoria would like to thank all of the Division 3 Clubs for their understanding and assistance with administering this change.
Lacrosse Victoria would also like to make all Division 3 Clubs aware of Malvern’s situation for the 2015 season. They won’t be playing their home games at the Malvern Town Hall. Instead, they will be playing the majority of their home games at Caulfield Park. This has been updated on Sporting Pulse.
Sporting Act of the Month/Year Award
Concerned that too often we only hear about the negatives in our sport whilst numerous acts of selfishness go unnoticed, the Lacrosse Victoria Board have decided to change this and highlight the positives of our great sport.
At their April meeting the Board of Lacrosse Victoria commissioned a new annual award to recognise the numerous acts of sportsmanship that occur around our grounds on a weekly basis.
The award will be presented at the Lacrosse Victoria Presentation Night to the individual, team or club for the act that most represents the spirit of sportsmanship. The award will carry a cash prize of $200 along with the recognition of the Lacrosse Community.
To support this initiative and ensure these acts of sportsmanship are not just recognised once a year, Lacrosse Victoria have also agreed to award $50 and a certificate to a monthly winner. The monthly winners will make up the finalist for the annual award.
The monthly winners will be judged from nominations received from Clubs and individuals throughout the month. All nominees during the month will be recognised on the LV Website along with the monthly winner.
This is a great opportunity for the lacrosse community to reward and recognise those acts of selfishness and sportsmanship that we observe on a regular basis and highlight the many positives of our great sport.
So let’s make sure that when you, or your members next see a player help an opponent off the ground, a coach reducing his player numbers to ensure a fair contest or a parent cheer on the efforts of an opposition player we find out about it.
Nominations can be made by clubs and individuals by emailing the Lacrosse Victoria office at secretary@lacrossevictoria.com.au stating the name of the individual, team or club and a brief description of the act of sportsmanship that would make them eligible for such an award.
