Camberwell Away
Win 10 to 6
I don’t believe in my time coaching at the club we have been 2 and 0, and while we haven’t played at our best over the last 2 weeks we have developed a belief that we can win against anyone now but need to bring our A game more as the season goes on and the competition gets harder.
We led 5 to 1 at the half and if not for a deflected shot by them that went in and 3 pipes by us we could easily have led 9 or 10 to nil with game over as a contest, the talk around the huddle during half time was of football scores and what was happening that night which is exactly how we came out to play after the half, Camberwell piled on 4 unanswered goals in 7 minutes and had us rattled for that time. It is to our credit the players regrouped after a time out and outscored them 5 to 1 in the last quarter and a half to win the game but it should never have been that tight a score line.
At the end of the season percentage will be important and belting teams that need to be belted is our next focus, Chadstone this week will be a great example of a game we should win easily if we maintain our focus for 2 hours and not 45 mins.
Murray and I are in Perth this Saturday and we hand over the reins to Rod Ansell, but make no mistake he is 100% in charge and I wish him and the players a successful fun day.
Good luck as well to Luca with his fundraising effort that night! (I reckon Brownie might go for around $1000 in the bachelor auction)
Cheers,
Glenn
Division 1
Opening round against Moreland. We were in the game at half time without looking great. The lack of bench hurt on a warm day. To Malverns credit, no one gave up all day. Great to see Shannon back with a few handy goals. More training and more numbers for next weeks game
Under 12
Fantastic start for the Reds. We played in 3 matches this morning and the improvement each game was great. The reds are a team of new players. Everyone had loads of fun. It’s going to be an exciting season, there is a lot of talent in this group.
B Grade Women
Round 1 vs. Melbourne University
The team travelled to Williamstown for the first game of the season with 3 rookies (Kate Francis, Georgia Meredith and Bridget Hogan) and not knowing whether they would face a strong Melbourne Uni team supplemented by Americans or not.
Selection had the team fielding 11 players but fortunately Ally Campbell backed up after playing a number of Junior games together with a surprise appearance from Donna Kelly after some “not so gentle” persuasion over a few drinks at the Clubrooms the previous night giving us 13 players.
The team got off to a great start led by Tara Healy in the Centre and has a commanding 8 – 2 lead by half time. Highlights of the first half also included Leanne “Bruiser” Currie in goals who continued her great form from last year and new recruits Georgia Meredith and Kate Francis along with Ally Campbell scoring their first goals in Lacrosse (Kate celebrated AFL style with a fist pumping run back to the centre!).
Romy Ansell (5 goals) and Sarah Bown ran hard all day and were well supported by Katy Benson and Maddy Croll who showed great signs of improvement from last season.
Rochelle Spiers and Bridget Hogan led the team in defence whilst Donna Kelly and Nina Reid created many opportunities in attack.
Preseason training started back in early February and the results of such a long preseason were evident in the way the team played in the game and many players showed significant signs of improvement.
Final Result – Malvern 14 defeated Melbourne Uni 4
