State League
Malvern vs Eltham.
Result – Win 12-7
Welcome all to season 2012…….. After what seemed like 6 months of preseason at Chadstone’s ground and then finally getting back home to the Town Hall after April 1st, we trekked down the highway to sunny Bendigo. Waiting for us was an Eltham outfit that “on paper” we should account for.
Unlike last season’s first game it was evident early we were “on” for the day but simple skill errors and clearing turnovers were the only things stopping us from being further ahead at the first break.
We got ourselves going in the second with some controlled attack packages and patient build ups to score on what was a hot day. Eltham’s frustration’s coming from the bench was fuel for Murray and my ears and l loved the fact our players did not get sucked into Eltham’s attempt to get us off our game with plenty of niggle.
We ran out comfortable winners 12 to 7 and there was a lot to like with Defenders Cam Scott, Dale Croll, Dan Mack and the evergreen Brad Currie taking the defensive body and stick positioning we have been working on with great success. It’s also great to have Dave Gal back with us and quality goalkeepers haven’t been plentiful at Malvern for a while and what a great difference it will make this year with Jay Baskaran and Dave Gal restoring the Balance in the net our way.
In face off and attack James Garrett, Josh Naughton, Anthony Jenkinson, Luca Lettieri, Rowan Anglicas, Callum Gerrard and Pat McGrath continue to stamp themselves as the nucleus of a side on the rise, but it is important to continue to add to that group and it was great to get Hamish Johnson his first game with the seniors and l look forward to including his brother Sam during the season.
We won yes, but our man up, attack structures and clearing weren’t quite at their best and this will be our target at training during the week…
Camberwell next week and I still hate that f$#@ng song, 2 and 0 gets us off to a great start in 2012.
See you all at training,
Rubber
