Match Reports
State League
State League took on Caulfield away this week in a do or die game as far as finals are concerned.
The winner of this game was going to a Final series and the loser would miss out.
Malvern got off to a fairly good start leading by a couple at the first change.
See Sawing for the next couple of quarters the pressure was on.
Going into the last quarter with a fairly tight score line Caulfield came back at hard as they had done the last time we met.
We pulled our fingers out in the last and picked up some critical ground balls, setting us up to finish strong and take the game and a place in this year’s final series.
The best thing that happened during this game was Malvern’s ability to be Strong in the head and keep our cool.
With our opposition being undisciplined and putting us into a Man Up situation late in the game we were able to capitalise.
We still have 1 more game to go and some very positive discussions amongst the group during this week, combined with a solid training session Thursday night will see us Hungry for a win this week.
Malvern 9 v Caulfield 6
Division 1
Win Vs Altona
Well the last game of the season at the Town Hall on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
What more can you wish for? A spot in the finals? Yeah maybe.
Due to the irregular season with players either away or moved up the ranks to bolster S/L we finished 5th.
Funny thing is that we were playing the 4th team Altona.
Having 14 players to choose from was a luxury all be it that the “highstepper” wasn’t getting those knees up due to a calf strain.
Thanks Joe for suiting up and taking a position on the team.
The “Highlight reel” today goes to Will James who had a fairly even tussle against their best defender all day.
The 2 were evenly matched and was a good contest to watch.
Think Will got the biscuits at the end of the game scoring about 5 goals to be one of the main reasons Malvern came away with a solid win.
Thanks to the Pinky for helping with the numbers today and sacrificing his own game in Div 3 to make sure Div 1 had enough.
Thanks to Michael “Sticky” Bown for taking on the role as coach this year and working to the best of his ability in getting a team together each week.
Jnrs – Jordy and Chappy for playing when they could and Capts Cam Mc and Jay for steering the ship throughout the year.
It was a pleasure to be amongst such dedicated players that pulled the jumper on each week whether with a full list or just enough to start a game.
Division 3
With Subs on the bench we went out to Melbourne Uni which as always a hard team to play against with their unorthodox set ups. With Melb Uni looking at their 5th win in a row they played us pretty hard.
A big Thanks to Harry, Ollie and Mitch Reid for coming to our assistance in securing a win to get us into the finals. Some great shooting from the big left hand Rob Lowe in second half finding his range.
It was great to see Father and son playing in defence together and as a result Div 3 gets to play in another finals series.
B Grade Women’s
Malvern V Melbourne Uni 6-4
Playing out at the Western oval we had the assistance of Brooke Reid and Jenna Croll coming up from the under 13’s to help out and that they did with Jenna scoring her first senior goal.
After a hard frustrating first half we started the second half at tied at 3 all. There wasn’t many goals being scored but we started to show a dominance in the second half with some great clears and control of the ball with Malvern coming away winners 6-4.
Under 18’s
Under 18s played Chadstone at Home this week.
Looking for 4 points the boys started off on Fire.
The team work kicked in early which saw us get a very handy lead early in the game.
Solid defence in the back half held the opposition way out from the cage and our clearing was good.
In the attack half our “High School” rotation was turning the heads of Chaddy’s defence, and they did not know which way to look. Dominating the centre and being real aggressive at the Ground balls all over the ground saw us take a commanding lead and powering home for a 21 -11 Win.
Good team effort as we strive to gather the 4 points and play Finals.
Under 15’s
Malvern Under 15s Match Report 23-7-14
The Malvern Under 15s played Moreland – Surrey Park at Surrey Park this week in the final game of the home and away season. Against a less experienced side Malvern ran out easy winners 31 goals to 1. Everyone contributed to the win.
The boys finished second on the ladder and play first placed Williamstown in the finals next week.
Well done to the team and let’s turn it on in the finals.
Under 13’s
The last game of the season proved to be a fight to the end.
The sun was out for the gang and spectators who played Camberwell Blitz at home.
It was the girls turn in goals this week, with Paige volunteering for the first half and Jacinta a reluctant participant in the 2nd. Both girls did a fantastic job, well done girls!!
Everyone fought hard for the ball today, there were a lot of ground ball contests and not one player held back, fantastic to see everyone working hard for ball.
We had an early lead but in the 2nd half the score was almost reversed.
The last few minutes had everyone biting their nails and Camberwell tried to disturb our momentum by calling time outs. Their players got very excited when they evened up the score, but with Ryan winning face off and a quick goal by Garrett we secured our win with seconds left.
Our scorers today were Lochie 2 goals 1 assist, Ryan 3 goals 3 assists, Garrett 3 goals with assists also to Brooke and Byron.
Final score 8-7 win
Under 11 Blacks and Red
Saturday 23rd August brought the finale of season 2014, with the annual U11 lightning carnival.
After a fantastic season the reds went into the carnival playing modified 6 a side games.
The Reds fell short of winning our division with 4 wins and 1 loss, and I am very proud of all their efforts.
Our last game was a back to back game to win the division and the kids were simply exhausted.
Additionally, nominated kids from the blacks and reds formed the ‘Knights’ or Malvern’s third side which played in the third division. (big thanks to Derek Zook for coaching)
This gave everyone an opportunity to play a lot of game time on the day.
Well done to all the Malvern Family on the day, this is what it is all about.
Not much more needs to be said, a fantastic and very successful U11 season for the kids.
Regards,
Adam
