Game Day Reports!
20th/21st June UPDATE
State League Vs Williamstown
Lost 12 to 7
A huge crowd for past players day and a pretty big focus on the start and not letting Williamstown of to their usual flyer in the first quarter was important and we were right on track at 2 all with 5 minutes to go and even the 3 to 2 quarter time score was good reward for effort.
Our attack in that time was reasonably good but we fell back into old habits around the 12 minute mark of the second quarter to the 3 quarter time whistle when we had ten poor unforced turnovers in attack in a row and that handed Williamstown 10 transition opportunities and they punished us with 6 goals as a good team will.
The way Williamstown’s attack worked in general was as good as I’ve seen this year and our attack could take note of how unbelievably unselfish they were and worked our defence into the ground with constant movement with ball and foot, in fact everyone of Williamstowns 12 goals came from the crease that gave Dave Gal no chance in the net.
Our defence was just ok to hold them to 12 but clearly Jon lilburnes aggression is sadly missed.
We will get back to full field drills and initiate more changes to practice looking for the 20% improvement we must find at both ends of the field and still believe we can be a threat at the end of the year in big games, but ball movement in attack must improve as the main issue.

Div 3
Malvern 4 Williamstown 18
Williamstown came to Chadstone to play Malvern last Saturday and they were prepared.
Tim Graham played his first game in div. 3 this year and was very good in the faceoff giving us first use of the ball but Williamstown managed to turn defence into attack and proceeded to give us a lacrosse lesson with score 11 to 3 at the half time break.
The second half was marginally better with Williamstown outscoring us 7 to 1.
Best: Brad Skepper, Rod Finnigan, Hamish Johnson, Zac Ansell.
Goals and assists: Rod Finnigan 1-1, Brendan Farrell 1-1, Hamish Johnson 1-1, Anthony Bosisto 1-0.

A Home game on a sunny Sunday afternoon against Chadstone and it was good to see a number of the Committee, State League Men along with Players Parents & Friends supporting the team from the sidelines.
The biggest challenge of the day was getting the team hyped up and in game mode after 2 weeks off (Bye and Walkover from Williamstown) and it was evident early we were lacking intensity as well as having to manage 4 subs on the bench (a rarity!).
The team started well gaining first possession and from there we were able to generate a number of scoring opportunities and an improvement in shooting saw the team score some good goals. Chadstone however had some speed thru the midfield and replied with 3 quick goals thru good ball movement and cutting. After a time out to settle the team down we scored some good transition and dodging goals to have a 9 – 3 half time lead.
The second half was a far better performance from the team with good transition and cutting in offence creating many scoring opportunities. We were dominating the centre face offs and ground balls and there were many passages of good play and we outscored Chaddy 6 – 0 for the half for a 15 – 3 win.
Once again the defence held up well led by Bruiser in goals supported by Ivy and Tarryn. The midfield and forwards rotated throughout the game and we had the opportunity to give the “Mozzies” practice at Face off which they did with great success.
Highlights from the game were a great cut and goal from Ivy, Nina scoring off a fast break (just as we had practiced!) and the performance of the “Mozzies” who were everywhere, running hard between the lines, picking up ground balls, dodging and creating many scoring opportunities. Well done to the Mozzies who are becoming more confident with each game, their skills are constantly improving and their hard running and tenacity on ground balls has been a real benefit to the team.
However there are a number of players unavailable throughout the remainder of the season so we all need to step up the intensity (at training and game day) and continue to work on our basic skills (catching, throwing and ground balls) as well as dodging and shooting if we are going to be a serious contender come finals time.
Under 17’s
So here we go again against one of the better teams in the comp… Good!
Playing at a higher level is always better for your game to improve yourself.
The guys came out of the box firing and was a great start compared to last weeks game. Winning the ball from X is key and the “double T’s” (Tim & Thomas) made sure of that.
Ball movement down in attack is getting better with Az & Danny making sure we go through the ‘right’ personal for match ups.
Defence is good and Chappy holds his own in the cage…and then some.
Play of the day goes to U15 Ryan Godber who executed a “John Grant Junior” move to catch the goalie off guard, along with everyone else!
Thanks to Ryan & Mitch (lazy 5) for coming up and bolstering numbers.
Next week, top of the ladder Footscray!
This will be the true test of where we are at…
U11 Blacks
A sunny fresh day greeted us as we headed to Caulfield, a team whom earlier in the season we had defeated 21-3.
The game started off with our ever reliable Alex Jackson in the goals, a position she thrives at and thoroughly enjoys.
We got out to a good start leading 5-0 at quarter time, our run and enthusiasm was good to see, however all credit to Caulfield who ran and kept us on our toes.
The ground was slightly smaller than usual, and this gave us something to think about as we continually were on top of each other when passing. Lesson to be learnt!
Danielle Mitchell, Ben Godber and Riley Suffolk kept running hard, and along with Matthew Arnold picked some key ground balls and were heavily involved.
As the game progressed we kept chipping away, and it must be said that goal keepers on both teams displayed some magnificent technique and saved some truly remarkable shots.
In the end we ran out 13-4 victors, with significant contributions from all concerned.
Will Rice with 4 goals / 4 assists and Liam Barnes 4 goals / 5 assists continue to demonstrate that not only can they score but are prepared to assist their team mates which is more important.
Thanks to Chris and Lachie for refereeing and Claire for scoring.
Next week at home v Footscray,
With thanks
Adam Barnes
U11 Reds
Temperatures at Surrey Park this Saturday morning languished so low in the single digits that by 9:30 the Under Eleven Reds were lucky to have all of theirs still attached. They took the field with jerseys pulled tight over jumpers, jackets, and in the case of the one of the Club’s two newest recruits, an exceptionally stylish poncho.
Surrey Park were old enemies by this stage, and all the players knew that this would provide a chance to gauge their improvement since April. The Reds came out firing, with superb energy through the midfield from the perpetually vigorous Fred Jackson, complemented beautifully by the steady stick work of Jake Sedey, whose improvement in the past few weeks has been exceptional.
At the defensive end of the field, Joe Massey held fast in goal while his brother Doug conducted a veritable symphony of defensive cohesion which the older Surrey Park players found difficult to disrupt all day long. The poncho-clad Julien Mansfield and his sister Amelie joined in the effort seamlessly, and provided plenty of athleticism scooping ground balls and leading the charge back up the field. Bella Korolik’s mellifluous skills led the offence once again, but it became difficult to convert this energy into goals late in the game when Surrey substituted a vertically prodigious keeper into the goal. Unfortunately, this allowed the opponents to slip away in the second half to take the win, but the Reds’ improvement and enjoyment continue apace.
“2nd Edition” coming soon with past players report from the President…
