Division 2
Malvern vs MCC.
Result – Won 12-7
Division 2 fronted up to an undefeated MCC at the Town Hall on a day when support was high due to State League having a bye.
MCC got off to a good start and had 3 goals on the board early before Malvern could find any meaningful possession. The team suffered an early injury blow with Rod Finnigan going down with a back injury.
Jay Baskaran and Rowan Anglicas were late arrivals but gave the team some spark when they hit the field and Malvern were able to go into the quarter time huddle down 4 – 3
The defence tightened up, the attack started to move the ball and with Craig Brown playing a controlling role in attack the goals began to flow.
Scores were tied at 6 all at half time and the arrival of Andy Cook in the third quarter added further strength to the defence which held MCC scoreless in the 3rd. MCC was starting to struggle under the pressure and spent much of the game in the penalty box.
Jeff Pfeiffer overcome a shaky start (and missing his nemesis Pinky on the field) to find the net and Malvern ran out winners 12 – 7.
Rowan Anglicas top scored with 5 goals and was well supported by Callum, Jeff and Shannon with 2 goals each.
Shannon Bell was awarded the Coaches player for taking over the Face Off after Rod was injured as well as playing a solid game in attack.
The Coaching staff tried to unleash a “Secret weapon” with Zac having a run in the attack half with a short stick in his last game before heading off overseas but unfortunately whilst he managed to involve himself in the play no goals resulted.
B Grade
Malvern vs Altona.
Result – Loss 5-14
The team played undefeated Altona on a cold and windy day at Williamstown.
Altona were a very small and young team but had the advantage of many years playing experience.
Malvern welcomed Phoebe Naughton into the team after a few years absence playing Football and studying in the country. Her height and experience were great assets to the team.
Once again the team tried hard and played some good lacrosse, ground balls were well contested and we received plenty of run and carry from all of our midfielders.
Leanne Currie had a great game in goals making some great saves and was well supported by Jess and Jaimie in defence.
Whilst the final score line showed a loss 14 to 5 the team once again showed improvement and can be proud of their effort against a far more experienced outfit.
It was great to see Nina get amongst it on the attack line managing a number of possessions and as with most of the players will continue to improve each week as they get more match experience and confidence.
Goal scorers for the day were Eleanor 3, Phoebe and Romy 1 each.
Under 16’s
Malvern – Caulfield vs Eltham Surrey.
Result – Won 15-14
Malvern under 16 travelled to take on the Eltham – Surrey combine last Saturday. The day started poorly when Coach Nick Luguine and club President and umpire Jeff Campbell got caught in traffic and were late for the game. They also had a big miss- understanding that 3 of the under 14 team, who also play 16,s regularly, were to travel with them from Malvern to Eltham to help. None the less, from adversity, opportunity presents.
Body Check over heard Jodie Hubbard saying before the game as the Malvern Ump ran onto the field that the under 16 boys stepped up and arranged their own warm ups and were ready to go, and that maybe they were finally starting to get it and realised if it is going to be, then ultimately it is up to themselves. These words turned out to be prophetic, as Body Check reports on the game:
The first quarter saw the opposition jump out to a quick 2-0 lead, but the Malvern boys hung in there and were able to scramble to being only 1 goal down at quarter time. Joe Blakeney, along with Mikey Petritsch led the way, with a great quarter from Darien in goals.
End of first quarter Eltham-Surrey 3 Malvern 2.
The second was an even tussle, and with the Eltham mud deepening, ground balls were vital to controlling the game. There were a lot of long, hard ground ball contests and packs. The Malvern crew were well lead by the Corey and Dylan, and Joe Blakeney stepped up and was hard at the contest, which showed with his 2 quarter goals. Coach Nick Luguine was juggling the team around as he had only 10 players, until Pauly Loulatzis took the field after completing his under 14 game. This proved to be vital as Malvern now had 1 on the bench. Although playing below their best, the effort was exceptional, everyone was contributing, encouraging, and the only area Malvern were winning was the ground balls, which kept them in the game
Half time Eltham 6 Malvern 5
The 3rd quarter started with a bit more intensity, with both teams in a position to win this close game. Darien continued excellent form in the cage and was playing a blinder in the goals. A muddy day, lots of contests, balls on the deck. This was a tough, hard, game of under 16 lax. Skill errors had the ball on the ground more than needed to be, and as the home team started to win more of these, they gained control and were able to put away a few quick goals to go to a 3 goal lead. Sensing that the game was slipping, Dylan Hubbard got into the action, and found his mojo and was able to hit the net twice. A great solo effort from Hamish Johnson and a late one from Mickey Petritsch, who whilst looking dangerous and playing well, but had not quite capitalised on some of his opportunities to bother the scorer and finish off the hard work from the defenders down the other end of the field. Another late goal to Eltham saw them win this quarter 5 to 4 and take a 2 goal lead going into the last
¾ TIME ELTHAM-SURREY 11 V MALVERN 9
Eltham-Surrey came out looking to ice the game, and after some near misses and great saving form Darien, they got the first goal to take a 3 goal lead. Malvern were down to 10 when young Fleming was down, and unable to take any further part in the game. With only 10 against the home teams 15 and no sub, 3 goals down, things did not look good. Coach Nick Luguine called another time out to give his boys a breather and to regroup. He reinforced this game was winnable, made a few rotational changes, and went with Corey in face off and his strongest midfield line up Joey and Big H. The boys lifted, and the 3 long poles continued to apply pressure which unsettled the home team. Malvern were relentless, with quick goals to Mikey, and Corey saw them back within 1 goal. Eltham – Surrey hit back with a classic forward face off drag from centreman Sam Green, which saw him take it all the way and score, to regain the 2 goal lead. With only 3 minutes to go, it was game over. Not to be denied, Malvern hit back with a strong inside goal to Dylan. The belief in the team continued to rise, and the last few minutes was frenetic. All day all over the field, the ground balls were hard to claim. With little more than a minute to go and the home team 1 goal up, Pauly Loulatzis, the smallest kid on the field went where Angels fear to tread, straight into a pack for a muddy ground ball contest. Getting low to the ground he made that ball his own, kept his head up and under physical pressure he found his team mate. A quick pass to Hamish, on to Joey then to Mikey saw a classic team goal to level the scores. The game was down to the last face off 15 all, the home crowd were stunned that Malvern were level. Eltham – Surrey won the face off and with the ball deep in their attack, they were peppering the goal. Our defence was brilliant, putting pressure on the shooter. With only 15 seconds left Joe Blakeney read the play to intercept and charge down field on fast break, all day Joey had been in everything. I doubted that he had it left in him to make it to the other end and the game would be a draw. With 2 opposition players in chase, Joey found it within to gut run and headed down field and was taking it to the goal. As the long poles slid and crunched Joey, his pass hit Mikey on the left corner. Mikey with a one on one with the goalie stuck it and by the time the visiting ref ref had called all clear, the final siren had sounded for an unbelievable 16 -15 victory and a 6-3 last quarter from the MLC under 16. This was without doubt a classic victory that these boys will relive for many years to come and those of us lucky to be there to witness will never forget. A great team effort and some belief instilled by Nick Luguine and from the boy’s themselves.

Under 14’s
Malvern vs Altona.
Result – Win 24-4
There was a bit at stake last Saturday; both teams were undefeated and the winner would emerge with the psychological advantage – the team to beat.
The Malvern team had a different feel about it. Missing was the first string goalie Chris Paz and Luke the backline mainstay. Luckily a couple of the squirrels from the U12’s pushed up and punched well above their weight all game.
Gus was up to his old Malvern tricks again as he took a back seat and ran the bench for the day. In his place, two of Malvern’s State League American recruits were to share the stand in coaches’ duties – Tanner and Dave.
Every body was pumped and wandering where we would be in a little over an hour’s time.
The start whistle blew.
Bang , bang , bang, bang, bang, ……………………. nine to three our way by quarter time. The Malvern team was dominant and merciless. By the time our stand in ref Mike Naughton (thanks Mike) blew the final whistle, a score line of 24 to 5 had been tattooed on every one’s lips.
Malvern had dispatched another contender and the vanquished would require some serious therapy to get over their ordeal.
Overall, a powerful team effort and it was hard to pick a stand out player. Both Elliot and Alex copped injuries but kept going all game – tough lads.
Alex snagged three votes for his efforts in the nets. It’s rare for a winning goalie of such a margin to get votes and that says a lot about Alex’s game – a thing of rare beauty.
Thanks to all the wonderful parent’s for their support.
Next week, we play Melbourne High at the Town Hall.
Be prepared to play outside your usual position.
We plan to have a night for the U14 Team at Pt.Leo over the holidays.
Perhaps some fishing on the Flinders pier on Sunday morning?
Need feedback on numbers and the best date to have it.
Under 12 Red’s
Malvern Red vs Camberwell Scorpions.
Result – Loss 2-22
Malvern Red lost on the weekend to a team that should clearly not be in the Red Division. However, in the saying this the Red team never backed away from the challenge of playing against a team which was much bigger than them.
Our three goalies for the day Ellie, Ben and Parth did a great job withstanding the barrage of shots they faced and made quite a few spectacular saves which the Malvern crowd loved to see.
The midfielders ran tirelessly the whole day lead by Frank, Abbie and Matthew, while the defence lead by Karl and Ashley did a great job sticking with their players even though the opposition was clearly much taller.
Attackers Paige and Jenna provided some options when the ball went into our attack line.
The highlight of the day was the great goal by two of our younger players, Will picked up a ground ball and passed it off straight to Josh, the other attacker, who then subsequently shot it right past the goalie in the bottom right corner, a textbook play by our two smaller players against the bigger opposition. Great play!
Even though the Red’s had a loss they all still had great fun and can’t wait for next week to get back on the winning side of the equation.
Under 12 Black’s
Malvern Black vs Chadstone Red.
Result – Loss 10-11
On Saturday the Under 12 ‘Blacks’ went out to Chadstone to match up against their top and undefeated team.
Thom and Ben were up playing in the Under 14’s and a “missing” Noah meant we were going to have only 9 players.
Aaron jumped in goals in the first half and did an awesome job stopping shots from much bigger and physical players.
Chadstone being a bit more “physical” resulted in one of their players getting a ‘1 minute penalty’ for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
(A very proud moment that no Malvern players retaliated and stooped to that level)
With 1 on the bench, rotations came pretty constantly to compensate weary legs as the score line was going nearly 1 for 1.
Sam, Ally and Jack changed up throughout the day from midfield to defence to the forward line and were very good at winning the ball in a contest.
Louis took over goals in the 2nd half and made great saves.
Ashley also put in running up and down constantly through the midfield line to get the ball into our attack.
Lochie is reading the ball well and made many ‘intercepts’ on the backline to deny Chadstone more chances of scoring.
Unfortunately the team ended up going down by 1 goal in a game that should have ended in a draw.
Chadstone were allowed a goal that shouldn’t have been but explaining to the umpire (Not Billy) why it shouldn’t have been, fell on deaf ears.
George (‘Bibs’) and Nathan took out the “Cold Rock” awards for playing a gutsy game against bigger opposition.
I was very proud the way the kids represented Malvern. They never gave up and put in all day.
Special thanks to Ange for scoring, Billy for umpiring and Tony a.k.a Snakeman at half time.
