Game Day Reports

State League Report by – Glenn Meredith

Malvern vs Camberwell.

Result – Won 15-7

Camberwell away has been a difficult trip for us over my 3 years as coach and even with the terrific Inclusions of Denison Colleges “jet lagged” Tanner Smith, Colin Molloy and Greg Higgins, l still wasn’t 100% sure we had their measure on a ground l have never won on as Coach.

We released all the attack structures that we had been playing over the year with Murray and I keen to watch the boys play a bit of freestyle lacrosse and when the scores hit 12 to 1 our way 17 mins into the second quarter a 20 goal belting to erase some of the past was on the cards.

Squeeka had the middle covered, David Gal was dominating in the cage and our defensive work rate was first class, with Greg Higgins controlling Camberwell’s best player Clinton Lander.

The movement and work off the ball in our attack half was pleasing with Colin Molloy and Tanner Smith starting to work in well with our own Josh Naughton, Callum Gerrard and Nick LeGuen.

We did put the “queue back in the rack” a bit in the last quarter with the 15 to 7 score line not truly reflecting our great output in the game, but overall it was a solid win and our confidence will only grow and get better from here.

Can’t wait for the 4 new light towers to be finished at the ground this week, full field training will improve us enormously and the second half of the season is full of opportunities to put Malvern back in the playoffs…..

It’s an exciting time around the club right now and this year is still in our own hands.

Division 2

Malvern vs Footscray.

Result – Won 17-4

The team played Footscray with a different look to the team that defeated Footscray in the opening round of the season.

With Shannon Bell away the balance of the team was thrown out by having 6 long sticks. With Jay solid in goals, the D rotated between Shakti, Pauly, Zac, Tim and Shermo whilst Cam Scott played short stick midfield.

It was Pauly’s first game out of the cage and he acquitted himself well. Shermo was great off the wing and in strict D with his talk and he picked up plenty of ground balls.

Cam Scott relished the opportunity with a short stick to score 3 goals and put plenty of physical pressure on the Footscray players around the ground laying out a number of players with great body checks.

“Old Man time” Rod F controlled the centres ably assisted by Joey and Jesse providing first use of the ball on many occasions.

The forward line worked very well with Browny (3 goals) controlling the ball, dodging and making some very good cuts, opening up opportunities for Jeff and Rowan (5 goals). Rowan has added some great firepower to the attack line and his skill stands out at this level.

There were plenty of other solid contributions through the midfield from Boppa and Pinky (our Irish connections!) and Tom. Pinky scored 2 goals and had a couple of assists and his pace and ground ball work was excellent. Opposition teams do not pay him the respect he deserves and his development as a first year player has caught many teams out as they underestimate his ability.

Final score was a convincing win 17 – 4

Under 18’s

Malvern – Caulfield vs Chadstone.

Result – Walkover

Under 16’s

Malvern – Caulfield vs MCC.

Result – Loss 15-10

The team played MCC away and put in a solid effort going down 15 – 10.

The team only had 9 players when the game started and acquitted themselves well playing one down for nearly the entire first quarter until Darcy, Jordi, Paul and Alex arrived from the Under 14’s.

Shorty (Mikey P), Darcy and Corey tried hard in the Centre with Joe and Hamish running tirelessly through the midfield the entire game.

The defence of Darian, Nick, Bruno and Tim battled hard all day and put pressure on MCC forcing them into many turnovers and poor shot selection.

In Offence Gary and Hugo tried hard and we managed to score some very good team goals and created plenty of good scoring opportunities with Shorty being our highest goal scorer with 5.

Under 14’s

Malvern vs Footscray.

Result – Win 16-6

Two things: Rust never sleeps and unfinished business.

Just because our wonderful coach was getting some well earned recreation does not mean we stop.

Darcy chose to stay and play Lacrosse even though he would have loved to be with his dad. Darcy is not afraid of responsibility and proved once again he is a leader. Thanks Darcy.

Another guy who did not let up was Chappy who blew the game apart in the third quarter with four sausage rolls and played a good team game in the other three quarters.

Paz has given the back line some definition and Nick, Luke and Tobias are big strong boys who look straight down the ground with purpose and resolve.  Luke’s running and clearance from the back line was a highlight.

Yes we won, but as a team we need to do more work in the “man –up” situation.  Remember Footscray only had nine players for the whole game.

The forwards were well led by Jordy.  Riley, the Footscray goal keeper was very good, so all goals were well earned.

Its always good to have Caleb playing and Maddi continues to find herself in the right spot at the right time. Paul featured in a classic one  / two in one of Chappies” goals.  Rupert is shaping up as a power forward and Alex scored some nice goals with intelligent cutting. Elliot did a lot of the grunt work in the midfield and constantly kept the ball going our way.

All the parents were proud of the way you stayed focussed and the way in which you listened to the stand in coach Josh Naughton. It was pleasing to see so many of you thanking Josh at the end of the game.

The final scores were Malvern 16 – Footscray 6 and the message is clear – particularly to Footscray – unfinished business!

Under 12 Red’s

Malvern Red vs Knox.

Result – Win 10-0

Under 12 Black’s

Malvern Black vs Surrey Park Red.

Result – Draw 11-11

A fine sunny winters morning greeted us on Saturday.

Malvern Lacrosse club is in a great position with our dedicated U12 brigade. It is a pity other Lacrosse clubs don’t share our enthusiasm with our Red team being given their third walkover in three weeks by Knox.

Special thanks to the boys who set up two fields in the expectation of both our 12’s playing at home.

With a quick reshuffle we set up a full size field,  got all the spare chairs we could find to seat our bench and started the game with 18 Malvern players.

Midfield rotation was always going to be difficult with so many on the bench.  There were rosy red cheeks and smiles all round as everyone got an even amount of game time.  Our goals were shared around and the defence was solid all day lead by our Goalie for the day Tom B.

The highlight of the day was the game tying play with less than a minute to go.  Frank started with the ball in the middle, made a perfect pass to Chappy who then ran towards goal.  He had the choice to pass to either of our forwards who had run hard to get open and found Lachlan in front of goal.

With the game tied the siren went and we were all very happy.  A great game was played by all.

Scorers Lachlan B 4-4, Ben C 3-0, Aaron 1-3, Ally 2-1 Paige 1-1
