Super Saturday at the Town Hall

Apart from having both our Under 11 teams playing at the Town Hall in the morning, we have two senior games at the town hall. At 1230 we have Division 3 playing against Bendigo with State League to follow at 230 against Footscray. It would be great to see a big #redandblack crowd watching both games.

Barrow of Booze

As previously mentioned we are running the Barrow of Booze again this week, we are very much kindly ask for our club members and senior players to donate a bottle or 6 pack of something to the cause. We also ask for all senior players to sell a raffle book of 10 tickets. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Please see Gaz with your donation and to pick up/drop off your tickets in due course. We are drawing the barrow at Spit Roast Night on August 23.

Social Media

If you didn’t know, the #redandblack family loves us some social media – we are on the following platforms Instagram – malvernlacrosse Twitter – @malvernlacrosse TeamApp – search “Malvern Lacrosse Club” after downloading the app. Join, follow, and get apart the club on the above platforms. You might even be able to score yourself a free drink, stubby holder, etc moving forward!

Coaches Corner

Coaches Corner is held every week at 545pm – it is a great opportunity for the club to unite as one big family. We go through all the games for the day (including our girls) from u11 up to State League. We would love to see you up at the rooms, grabbing a drink with your family and friends. Maybe even grab one of Leanne’s famous Fried peanut butter rolls!!

Chocolate Fundraiser

If you have still got your box of chocolates at home, could you please bring your money and chocolates back to the club if you have forgotten. This, like the above, is one of our fundraisers for the year. However, should you be in the mood to sell another box please see Nina Reid who will be more than happy to give you an additional box to sell and collect the money. If you need to sell a frog or two to finish your box, just ask Pinky – he will be sure to help you out.

Do you have a spare baby changing table?

If you do, let us know, we would love to borrow it for the season. Or, maybe, if you know some kind soul that could be able to donate one to the club, let me know. Finally, a big THANK YOU to all those people who have stepped up and helped around the club in the last few weeks. If you have a spare moment and wish to give us a hand, please let any Bop, Gaz, Pinky or any other committee member know.

Match Reports

State League

State League – Lost 12-18 to Camberwell A disappointing performance by State League on Saturday. Fundamentals, catching and throwing and taking care of the ball let the team down. We welcomed Patty Mac back into the team after a lengthy absence due to injury and he got back to business, winning 80% of his face offs and generating plenty of possession for us. A huge thank you to Shannon Bell who stepped up and helped jump in the cage for the team who lost Jay at training to a broken thumb on Thursday. Rooboy once again was given a task and did not disappoint. Best Players: Shannon, Patty Mac, Lance Coleman.

Division 1

Div 1 Vs Altona @ Malvern (Loss 11-8) Thursday Night after training was …. hectic to say the least. Team lists were written and rubbed out and still there wasn’t any clarity as to what team would be playing out of Div 1 or Div 3? With 7 players in each, unfortunately the decision was made to scrap this weeks Div 3 game to bolster numbers in Div 1. With a ‘who’s who’ of players wearing the ‘red & black’ , 16 players took to the field against Altona. This was no ‘cakewalk’ by any stretch of the imagination going up against Altona’s ‘best’ team. With recruits coming from out of the ‘woodwork’, Malvern had a pretty handy team non the less. ‘Bozzie’ already notching two Div 3 games under his belt, somehow found his way ‘home’ in taking up position in goals! (like riding a bike he said!) Paul Cook, donned his gear and was a welcome return to the field even getting picked up by their best defender! (Must have heard the rumours..) Pauly “Hey Bro” grabbed his long pole and did his part along side another Div 3 faithful…Pinkie! (Comedy Night coming soon!) Shorty, Rob Lowe (The Gentle giant) and Darian, all shared the load and helped throughout the day whether that was in defence or attack. T-Bird was the ‘General’ calling the shots in attack by feeding the ball to guys cutting through the crease, centimetre perfect! ; ) Geoff took up the bottom left and typically made life a misery for their poor defender trying to work out a way to get the ball off him with no luck.. ‘Sticky’ & ‘Fins’ (sounds like a kids show?) shared the work taking centres in the middle and did a great job once they could get traction! Zac, House, Camel and Shep played D and I’m glad I’m on their team as ‘Jack O’Toole’ would be impressed! Laying the law to all potential ‘dodgers’… “Here’s your receipt…thank you for coming! (Hard but fair….mostly) Cuz played midi and got the first 2 goals for Malvern moving like he did when he was 18. (17 yrs ago)……. The game went like this… 1st Q 3-2 Altona 2nd Q 5-4 Malvern 3rd Q 7-6 Altona Final 11-8 Altona Although we didn’t get the 4 points, it was a great game played by all and in honor of ‘Ken Cook’. Thank you

Division 3

Walkover

B Grade Women’s

With a few of our players away it was always going to be a tough one taking the field with only 9 players. Footscay got the jump on us in the first half but we fought back in the second half scoring 5 to their 6. Lost 14-7

Under 13’s Girls

Unsure as to whether or not we could take the field as we had an extra 3 girls away, lots of messages being sent back and forth thanks Tarryn and Barnsey  and an 11th hour call to Caulfield saw them happy for us to play with a few extra boys. James Suffolk, James Gibbs and Ben Korolik we’re happy to lend a helping hand and Garret was keen to play up against his sister.  We also had Michelle who has never played before happy to give up her last school holiday sleep in to help us out. Ryan in goals again made some wonderful saves through out the day. Everyone stepped up, the boys adjusted well to the girls rules. Garret played well in middy all day.  Brooke and Jenna ran hard and Paige and Jacinta played their best positions in attack and defense.  Brianna attacked the ball hard in D and also fought hard to score 2 goals. James also scored a goal.  Paige was consistent with 1 goal in each qtr and 2 in the last.  Garret made a handy 3 g 2 assists, Jenna 1 g 2 assists and Brooke 2 assists. Without knowing the score or time left everyone was fighting hard to get the ball out of Caulfields attack but they managed to scurry the ball through in the dying 0.17 sec left to win by 1 goal! Well done everyone and thank you to all that helped fill the team to enable us to play. Final score loss 13-12

Under 18’s

This week we played Camberwell who only had 8 players. Different scenario than most weeks and I guess we have NOT been confronted by this situation before. I think that mentally we thought it would be easy but found out that it was not to be. Camberwell with a very good goalie were able to make many saves and bomb the ball to the other end and had quite some luck. However when we knuckled down and moved the ball like a team we were able to get going And come away with an 18 – 10 win and the 4 Points Special thanks to Toby Jardine for stepping up and jumping in the cage and to Paul Loulatzis for pulling the boots on and helping out while we had some players away.

Under 15’s

The Malvern Under 15s faced Melbourne High away this week. Against an inexperienced opposition, in a one sided game, Malvern ran out winners 27 goals to 0. Battling for numbers, with several players away, we had six starters getiing close to match time. A huge thanks to Ben Freeman, Ryan Godber and their parents, who after playing a tough, cold game in Eltham made the long run to Parkville to give us eight players for the start of the match. It’s worth noting Melbourne High were sportsmanlike in offerring us two of their players before the match if we couldn’t field eight, which would have avoided a walkover and ensured the game went ahead. We started the match eight on eight. In the second quarter two of the Melbourne High boys joined Malvern making it ten on ten for the rest of the game. Aaron dominated face off and bagged a lazy 13 goals. Facing off against players two or three years older than him Ryan was also great in the middle and scored 5 goals with 2 assists. Mitch Reid finished with 7 goals and 4 assists, always looking to share the ball. Playing his second game in arctic condiitons Ben Freeman ran all day, was very unlucky not to score and finished with an assist. There wasn’t a lot of opposition for our longpolers, seeing Harry, Sam and Tom Martin getting up to the mid and forward line throughout the match. Well done Harry who got one in the back of the net. Thanks to Ben Chapman for going in goals. Fair to say he wasn’t peppered with shots but finished with a clean sheet. Good to see our parents out braving the cold and supporting the team. Thanks to those who took raffle tickets to sell. Also thanks to Bopper for umpiring both the Under 13s and 15s this week.

Under 13’s

With numbers low again this week we had Ben Godber help us out along with a few U11’s thanks to the 3 James’, Arnold, Suffolk and Gibbs for making the trip out to cold muddy Eltham. It wasn’t the best start with no Rowan to umpire, Boppa filled those boots for the first half. Ben in goals in the 1st making some great saves. Eltham seemed better prepared for the game than us getting a big head start. Even with wins in face off it wasn’t enough to get the ball moving. With 1 goal scored in the 1st qtr and 2 in the 2nd by Ryan assisted by Garret, Ben Freeman and James Suffolk. That was the only scoring for the day. U15’s were also low in numbers we lost Boppa (chauffeur) and Ryan at half time.  Jay took over umpiring and Nina ran the bench. Whilst running on the field Jay was able to see best where improvements need to be made and is confident next weeks game will be much improved. There was definite improvement in the 2nd half and Gibbo made his debut in goals. Coming into the last Qtr we lost another player to the U15’s along with the scorer, thank you Leanne for staying with us and taking over. It will be great to have a full team back next week!! Final loss 26-3

Under 11 Black’s

Under 11 Red

After a bye and the school holiday break, Malvern Reds returned to the playing field to take on Eltham. With the Blacks having a bye, it was an opportunity to continue to support the U13’s and send the James’s up, and then have their spots filled by Charlie, Tom and Sam Bishop. (big thanks) In arctic conditions it was great to have good support for both teams with plenty of parents on hand, and they witnessed a great spirited game of U11 lacrosse. Will Rice demonstrated his off season work is paying off with 2 goals and 5 assists, and he was supported by a number of scorers. Brandon Tran and Liam Barnes continued solid seasons with plenty of run, Riley Suffolk and Jerome Hicks were involved scoring a couple of goals, and the Bishops contributed around the ground with solid skills (and worked hard as goal keepers having a quarter each) Naturally the Korolik’s (Ben and Bella) were on hand, with Ben starting in the cage for the first quarter and doing exceptionally well. Special mention to Bella, who started the off season unsure of playing, but has developed into a competent and confident girl, who runs hard, picks up key ground balls and makes a significant contribution to the team – Well Done. Final Score 8 – 5
