Joker Jackpot

Big thanks to those who came up on Saturday Night and supported the club and helped raise some vital funds for the club. Truly a great night had by all involved – never has a microphone been used with some efficiency.

Pinkie Comedy Night – AUGUST 9

When Alan ‘Pinkie’ Sweeney isn’t being epic on the lacrosse field scoring goals and tallying votes, he is pretty much the 2014 version of the 1980s Eddie Murphy, and that he has organised for a comedy night to be held at the Town Hall!!!!

August 9, $15 entry and hours worth of laughs.. Sounds like a good night to me, mark this event down in your calendar. See Pinkie or anyone at the bar for tickets.

Please note – Owing to the nature of comedy this night is for a mature audience due to some possible adult themes and language.

Barrow of Booze

In keeping with the much needed fundraising theme, no doubt you have all heard Gaz promoting the barrow of booze at coaches corner and whenever else he is given a moment to talk.

We are very much kindly ask for our club members and senior players to donate a bottle or 6 pack of something to the cause. We also ask for all senior players to sell a raffle book of 10 tickets. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Please see Gaz with your donation and to pick up/drop off your tickets in due course. We are drawing the barrow at Spit Roast Night on August 23.

It is vitally important that all those with the tickets sell a book by August 23 and return the tickets and money, thanking you.

Volunteer – THANK YOU

A big thank you to all those who have donated their time, effort, sweat, tears and money to the club over the past month when we have been short a couple hands. We thank you for your time and efforts. Trust us when we say it has not gone unnoticed.

Merchandise

If you have not already got your merchandise, please pick it up or ask Lisa Smith to see the range of great new gear the club has on offer.

Social Media

If you didn’t know, the #redandblack family loves us some social media – we are on the following platforms

Instagram – malvernlacrosse

Twitter – @malvernlacrosse

TeamApp – search “Malvern Lacrosse Club” after downloading the app.

Join, follow, and get apart the club on the above platforms. You might even be able to score yourself a free drink, stubby holder, etc moving forward!

Coaches Corner

Coaches Corner is held every week at 545pm – it is a great opportunity for the club to unite as one big family. We go through all the games for the day (including our girls) from u11 up to State League. We would love to see you up at the rooms, grabbing a drink with your family and friends. Maybe even grab one of Leanne’s famous smoked egg and bacon vegemite sandwiches (trust me, they are good)

Chocolate Fundraiser

If you have still got your box of chocolates at home, could you please bring your money and chocolates back to the club if you have forgotten. This, like the above, is one of our fundraisers for the year. However, should you be in the mood to sell another box please see Nina Reid who will be more than happy to give you an additional box to sell and collect the money. If you need to sell a frog or two to finish your box, just ask Pinkie – he will be sure to help you out.

Do you have a spare baby changing table?

We are still on the HUNT. If you do, let us know, we would love to borrow it for the season. Or, maybe, if you know some kind soul that could be able to donate one to the club, let me know.

Player Registrations

A number of both senior and junior players remain unregistered this season on sporting pulse. Despite the best efforts of the committee, a number of players have still failed to register. If you are not registered you will be ineligible to play finals. Please check sporting pulse scores from the past week to see if you have registered. If not, we please ask that you do ASAP.

Match Reports

State League

16-9 Win v Footscray

A great team effort on the weekend saw State League pick up the 4 points. We dominated between the lines picking up plenty of fast break opportunities and also giving plenty of the ball to our offence where Josh Naughton orchestrated the offence and took control of the game and ensured that we got the ball into the right areas. Our defence was compact and controlled the crease, sliding in unison and with the body – lead by Dale Croll with a great open field hit in the middle of the ground. Michael Morris was the BOG for the day, managing to score 5 goals, having a couple of assists and giving all the hustle play and ground balls needed for us to control the game. Our newest american, Derek Zook managed to snag a lazy 3 goals 1 assist with the long pole.

Best Players – Michael Morris, Derek Zook, Jay Baskeran and Josh Naughton.

Division 1

Well out to Camberwell we went with a pretty decent team on paper. Subs being at 3 was awesome! Squeak just coming back from his USA gap year came (5 hrs sleep) and played to give us some drive through the middle. Darcy put his hand up to play in goals and did a great job. (Wouldn’t catch me in there) Chapin was rotated down to help out with the 2 player rule in SL. With their S/L team having a bye we knew that there would be a couple of SL players in the team. Non the less, Malvern put its best foot forward but couldn’t hold out the shots getting cranked at Darcy. In the end we went down to a ‘fortunate’ Camberwell side. Thanks to Westy for umpiring unbiased and Leanne for keeping score.

Division 3

This week we played Bendigo at home. It was made pretty easy having the two Ollie’s back in the team along with goal machine Bossie between them scored a bagful.
Rod continued to play in the centre holding them at bay.
Defence was solid all day with “Little” Paulie in the Cage and Pinkie and Faz with the long flashing poles. Garron worked hard all day. Malvern 16 – 3 over Bendigo.

B Grade Women’s

Malvern played Newport who are second on the ladder and came away with a two goal win.
Playing a very good team game from start to finish getting the ball where we needed it and chasing down everything in defence. Great win especially after it looked like a a Malvern walkover two weeks out.
Thanks to all our awesome helpers… Claire Elise, Tori (Lauren) and Faye! Also a big thanks to Eleanor!

Under 18’s

The Under 18s played Footscray away this week.

With a full team for the first time this season the Coaches were a bit more relaxed.

Dominating the face off we got a good start leading 6-1 at quarter time.

Ball movement was very crisp and we were winning a big percentage of ground balls.

There was some passages of play that were quite amazing for the age group moving the ball down the field and into the Net.

Our aim was to get the 4 points and get out of there.

The boys did this and came away with a 14-2 Win.

The goal scoring was fairly spread out amongst the team and most of our goals were assisted.

Special mention to our Goalie Tim Samoilov who jumped in and allowed only 2 goals to pass by.

It was a good rounded team effort, but still with a lot of room for improvement.

We just need to keep winning and a place in the Final four is there for the taking.

Under 15’s

The Malver Under 15s defeated Camberwell at Camberwell 15 goals to 6 in a performance that saw all players contributing to the win. We were up 6 goals to 1 at quarter time then flattened off in the second and third before a good team effort and a 3 goal to 0 final quarter saw us clinch the game. The match was brilliantly umpired by the respective presidents of the two clubs.

Great to see Squeaker, Sarah, Tom and Lochy back, all on deck after arriving from America the same morning. That really shows committment to the team !

We had six goal scorers, so a good spread. Lochy bagged 2, Tom Bown 3, Aaron 3, Ben Chapman 3, Ryan 1 and Mitch Reid 3.

Aaron, Mitch Reid and Ryan shared the face off giving us plenty of the ball out of the middle. Tom Bown and Kaileb worked hard on the midfield all day.

Tom Martin, Sam and Harry made great field position and played solid body on body defence. They were hard at it in the scraps, with the ball in Camberwells attack more than the final score indicated.

Again the Under 13s played up, this week travelling from Footscray for their second match. Ben Freeman, Byron and Ryan fought hard for the contested ball and ran out the four quarters.

Aaron and Ben Chapman did the work in goals with some excellent saves.

There were times in the match we faded a bit. Against tougher opposition we need to listen to our coaches, keep concentrating ,keep our passes up and keep our talk up.

It was a good team win that will see us remain third on the ladder. With Eltham at Eltham next week lets keep racking up the wins. Well done boys !

Under 13’s

Malvern v Footscray – 25-3 loss

The U13s came up against a very strong Footscray team this week.  The scoreboard isn’t a reflection on how our team played, as they ran hard all game, fighting for balls, but just coming up short.  Without a bench the kids were all very tired looking for a sub when there was none to be found.  Keep your heads held high – you are playing awesome lacrosse J

This week after their US trip we welcome back Lochie (and maybe Meg) to the field.

Under 13’s Girls

Will the team back to normal with Meg in the side and Lochie back in goals the 13 girls came up against a greatly improved Eltham side, last time it was a one sided game but this time the Eltham team have us a run for our money! I gave our dynamic duo and Brooke the tough task of locking off their best players and they didn’t let me down at all running hard and playing amazing defence all game.  Paige and Jenna were again great in front of goal scoring numerous times for us along with Sarah, Meg, James and Brianna adding to the scoreline. I was also impressed with Jacinta’s defence and ground balls!! Well done Bina you always work hard around the ground.  Loc made some great saves and clears for us and Victoria is developing into a great lacrosse player, it’s awesome to watch both her and Brianna growing with confidence and their skills improving so much every week!!  Defence wins games and our fantastic defence did just that for us, we still need to work on not ‘passing through sticks’ as Eltham punished us for it many times, the turnovers resulting in goals many times.  Thanks again to the many u/11’s and Ryan and for helping out while the Bowns were away enjoying the warm weather!  Well done girls another fantastic team effort. Very proud and happy to be your coach!  A young Willy team this week will give us a good chance to work on our left handed play and passing skills.

Under 11 Black’s

Our under 11 Blacks had a tough day at the office against a larger, bigger and older Eltham team on the weekend. Despite the loss, it was great to see the constant hustle of the team, chasing hard and fighting for every ground ball. With consistent training, there is no doubt a number of these kids will be valuable State League players in the future.

Under 11 Red

he U11 reds took on Camberwell at home this weekend.

With injuries, illness and kids away, it was a thinning of the juniors and challenging to support both U11 teams as well as the U13’s.

Nonetheless, 8 determined kids took to the field against a more physically mature and developed Camberwell side.

It was a tough day at the office for the kids, and we went down 14-4.

James Arnold played a full game in goals and continued his great debut year, Will Rice and Liam Barnes worked hard all day (scoring 2 and 2 goals respectively), and Carl Davies showed that with continued coaching he will be a quality player.

The two Korolik’s (Ben and Bella) continue to learn about the game, and their development is a credit to them both. Additionally, Riley Suffolk and Jerome Hicks continue to play an important role in the team and picked up some key ground balls.

We look forward to our next game next weekend and the continual development of all of our kids.
