Social Events
Pinkie Comedy Night – AUGUST 9
Alan ‘Pinkie” Sweeney is hosting our next social function and he is pretty much the 2014 version of the 1980s Eddie Murphy, so given that, he is holding a comedy night at the club with a large contingent of the city’s best up and coming comedians.
August 9, $15 entry and hours worth of laughs.. Please note – Owing to the nature of comedy this night is for a mature audience due to some possible adult themes and language.
Barrow of Booze
No doubt you have all heard Gaz promoting the barrow of booze at coaches corner. We are very much kindly ask for our club members and senior players to donate a bottle or 6 pack of something to the cause. We also ask for all senior players to sell a raffle book of 10 tickets. This is a major fundraising initiative for the season and it would be great if all senior players could sell a book of tickets.
Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Please see Gaz with your donation and to pick up/drop off your tickets in due course. We are drawing the barrow at Spit Roast Night on August 23.

Match Reports
State League
State League went to Eltham with 4 points in mind.
Due to the Div 3 running a bit late the game did not start until almost 3.00pm.
Pat Mac dominated the face off again getting first use of the ball 95% of the game.
Attack was working well early except for the Goal Shooting aspect.
Up 2 Nil at the quarter it should have been a lot more.
With conditions very slippery it was a hard slog however our ground ball determination was good.
Working hard for our goals the D had lots of work and Jay stood up in the Cage and was fantastic.
With good patience and persistence in attack we worked hard all day for a 3 Goal win.
Good solid win and we got the 4 points. Malv 11 – Elth 8
Division 1
Div 1 Report – Win 25-6
Vs Eltham @ Eltham
Div 1 went out to Eltham and with only 12, we still had a very handy looking team.
With S/L playing on their best ground, Div 1 was relegated to the 2nd best ground which was pretty sticky and hard to run through.
Cam Mc was back although a bit ‘ginger’ with a calf strain so was placed on the forward line with Trav.
Their ‘pick & roll’ style of play was going to be a headache for the Eltham defenders to try and keep up with.
Squeak took the majority of centre action and ‘dominated’ all day with Chappy giving him a ‘chop out’ towards the end when he wasn’t scoring goals.
Zac,Sticky and House once again were the controlling force in ‘D’ and kept their scorers to a few.
Darcy had a cracker in goals being the 2nd week in there and was getting a good read on the flight of the ball.
(even had their biggest attacker try and give him a big cuddle..)
We had a couple of ‘helpers’ being that of Will James & Michael Morris who are pretty good to watch in action. Will was down in attack and moved the ball well feeding and receiving to clock up the score board at a steady pace.
Michael ran off the wings with his ‘long pole’ getting first dibs on any stray ground balls and then switched up to a shorty when needed.
Wasn’t sure if he had a side bet with ‘Zook’ but scored a few goals even a behind the back which left the Eltham goalie gobsmacked..
Jordy is showing how well he can move and read the play being involved in scoring either dishing off or sealing the deal with a few goals.
Jordy ,Chappy and Darcy are going to be very exciting to watch in a few years when they’re starting line up in S/L.
B.O.G would have to go to Squeak as having 1st use of the ball is a huge advantage for any team and was solid all day. Also manages to get in their bigger players ears if needed and take ‘attention’ off the juniors.
(probably explains all the bruises! Lol )
If the team continues to play like this and with some ‘upsets’ on teams higher on the ladder, there is no reason why we won’t be in finals.
Unfortunately due to the ‘World Series’ and some injuries/unavailables, all teams have had to compensate but will soon be ‘locked in’ nearing the end of the season.
Make sure you’re registered and financial boys!….
Cuz (aka ‘El Prez’)
Division 3
For the second time this year we started with only 9 players out at Eltham. This time was a little bit tougher as they had more run in them. In the second quarter we were bolstered by Rob Lowe coming from 18’s at Williamstown and I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to see a player arrive at a game. In the second half it was still pretty tight using our time outs to our best advantage to give us some rest.
We finally took the lead with a 2 goal buffer late in the 4th quarter to pull out a win. Well done guys it was a great win.
B Grade Women’s
The women’s team took on top of the ladder Williamstown at Willy. In a very hard game where there was some rather nasty Stick checking resulting in the use of some band aids. We held them for most of the game but they got away from us in the last few minutes. Rest assured that we are really in with a good shot come finals time as long as we play a focused team game and keep our eyes on the prize.
Under 18’s
This week the U 18s played Willy City away.
With 12 players everyone was going to get a good run.
The boys had done some extensive work on their attack structure at training on
Thursday night and really did bring it to the game. We started off well and scored a couple of
quick ones early first quarter and took control of the game towards the end of the first.
Our defence was solid led by Tim Samoilov in the cage who has stepped up as Goalie and become
a vital weapon for this team. This game was to be the best TEAM performance so far this year.
Defence being very Non committal and when the ball went into attack the discipline was first class.
A great team Win Malv 18 – Willy 5.
Under 15’s
The Malvern Under 15s played Eltham at Eltham this week. In another game that was close at half and three quarter time, a 4 goal to 1 final quarter saw Malvern take out the win. The final score was 11 goals to 6. Again thanks to our Under 13s and their parents, who after a successful game in Moreland made the trip to Eltham for their second game. Tom Bown and Harry Lowe went on to play Eltham in Div 3 for another Malvern win. Well done to Harry making his senior debut.
We had five goal scorers with Lochy, Mitch Reid and Aaron scoring crucial goals in the second half.
Lochy finished with 2, Tom Bown 2, Aaron 2, Mitch Reid 4 and Ryan 1.
Tom Bown, Mitch Reid and Aaron worked hard in face off. Wilco, Kaileb, Byron and Ben Freeman backed them up on the midfield, Ben copping a hard knock in the second quarter and playing on. Ryan showed how it’s done with some fantastic defensive midfield work against bigger bodies.
In a game where both teams had plenty of the ball in attack, with a lot missed shots, the backline had their work to do. Tom Martin, Sam and Harry bodied up, scrapped for the ground balls and got the job done.
Ben Chapman had a great game in goals making a heap of saves.
With Altona at Altona next week we need to put in a four quarter performance.
Well done boys in a very successful weekend for the club !
Under 13’s
The team travelled out to Moreland today Lochie, Byron, Wilko and Justin all returning after a few games away.
It was a quick scoring start to Malvern with a face off win from Ryan, straight run down the field pass off to Loc for a goal, then again within a few minutes.
The team pulled together well with some great passages of play. Justin worked hard on ground balls all day with plenty if back up and support from Ben, Frank, Wilko and Ben G.
Byron was in goals to start before heading out to Eltham with Wilko to help out the U15’s. Lochie stepped in to goals after scoring a handy 5 goals himself.
Jacinta made a great effort in her debut in face off and with some practice will no doubt start winning a few.
Paige was great in attack getting herself open on many occasions even scoring a goal and an assist at the other end. Brooke ran hard attacking the ball all day helping out with 2 assists.
Ryan’s handy work showed, winning face offs, scoring 7 goals and 4 assists. Garrett was great around the field also scoring 1 goal 1 assist along with Justin’s 1 goal 2 assist and Ben’s 2 assist the whole team contributed to a 15-7 win over Moreland.
Under 13’s Girls
The u13’s came up against a much younger and inexperienced Williamstown team this week.
Williamstown only had 8 players so we agreed to play 8 on 8, giving us three on the bench for the first time ever and making it hard work for me having to sub players on and off, a luxury we are not used to!
First quarter instructions were to play our game, give 100% and practice some of the things we have been doing at training. After playing great lacrosse and getting a 7-0 lead we decided, in the spirit of good sportsmanship and development to all play non dominant hand and have 5 clean passes before going to goal.
We came away easy winners and having some bench time showed us how we can improve our game play and make better choices during play.
All best on ground for me this week.
To my girls:
The reason we have been so successful so far is because we are a tight knit group of not just players but friends!! We play as a team and help each other out all the time, I want you all to remember this as we head into finals, I love coaching you girls because you are all gorgeous, confident young women who display compassion and good sportsmanship. You are all amazing players individually who will go far with your lacrosse, but as a TEAM we are unstoppable!

Under 11 Red
U11 Reds took on Williamstown at home today.
Going into the game we recognised that Williamstown had been a reasonably strong U11 team, as such we took in a slightly different and more developed team into the game.
This paid dividends right from the very start, with all kids looking solid and making a significant contribution to the game.
Our run, contested ground ball and enthusiasm for the game saw Malvern Reds defeat Williamstown 9-3.
The injured James Arnold helped out as the team scorer, and Josh Ives, Danielle Mitchell, Liam Barnes and James Suffolk played a strong quarter each for us in goals.
Brandon Tran maintained his strong season with 6 goals (4 on his left and 2 on his right), Lachie Hirth displayed a mountain of work around the ground with 1 goal and 2 assists and Will Rice continued with a great amount of tenacity picking up many ground balls.
We continue to work to ensure Josh scores his first goal of the season, and support Riley Suffolk who plays an important role with his work on the forward line.
A great team effort.
