Coaches Report State League – Glenn Meredith
Caulfield Vs Malvern
Result – Lose 9 – 19
State League travelled to Caulfield looking to cement our place as a finals challenger and we came up 9 goals short, stick skills in clearing the ball and contested ground balls not up to standard on the day along with a lack of ball movement in attack the few times we went forward.
Losing A.J before the game and Cam Scott during didn’t help our rotations on a hot day but really had little effect on the game, we were beaten plain and simple by a more committed team.
We as a group will be lifting our work ethic over the next few weeks and l believe this team is not that far off playing our best lacrosse.
Chris Baker will be at training Thursday night to give us some much needed face off and midfield work, we need to now as a group step up because the season is on the line Saturday against M.C.C.
Coaches Report Division 1 – Brendon Farrell
Malvern Vs Chadstone
Result – Lose 5-15
Division One knew it was going to be a hard match against Chadstone up at the Town Hall, Chadstone’s Division One team is their top team and on Thursday night it looked like we were going to struggle for players.
On Saturday players came out of the woodworks with a one off guest appearance in the goals by Spiro Melissovas, who thought they would ever see that happen!!! Spiro didn’t look to lose any form in the cage even though it has been 12 years since he played there last.
Rowan Anglicas, Jessie Coleman and Michael Petritsch also had their first games this year with D1.
The team played well with Toby Exton doing well in the centre and the old head (Daniel Keisler, Tim Laidlaw and Shannon Bell) controlling the ball in attack.
Our biggest problem was controlling loose ground ball in the middle which often lead to Chadstone going into attack.
The defence play well slowing Chadstone’s drive and overall the team can be proud off their effort holding Chadstone to 15-5, next week we face Footscray away which again will test our skills
Goal Scorers Daniel Keisler 1, Tim Laidlaw 1 and Shannon Bell 3
Coaches Report U’18 – Josh Naughton
Malvern Vs MCC
Result – Lose 11-18
On a nice sunny day at the Town Hall, the under 18s Malvern/MCC combined team played against arch-rival Williamstown for the second consecutive week and produced a much better showing than the 18-2 loss away last Saturday, and ended up going down 18-11. After a slow start which had us down 6-2 at the first change, the team rallied together and fought hard to almost draw level at 3 quarter time 11-12. But Williamstown proved too strong in the last quarter and ran over the top of us scoring 6 goals to nil. Callum Gerrard again top scored with 4 goals, Anthony Jenkinson, Samuel Johnson and Billy Exton had 2 each, while Sam Maher, one of the MCC boys, scored one. Special mention must go to our new goalie, Will, who had a great game in goals making many fine saves in just his second game ever, and the defence was much improved with Jimmy Anglicas taking on a leadership role with a couple of capable MCC defenders. Next week we will play Melbourne High School at the Albert Ground.
Coaches Report U’16 – David Joy
Malvern Vs Altona
Result – Win 15 – 14
With only 9 players available for this game it was always going to be tough.
Altona chose to play a full team of ten. So we knew every possession would count and we needed to play smart and value our time with the ball. Swapping goalies 3 times swayed things around. Also not dominating the face offs (for the first time this year) put a lot of pressure on our defence who know what a 5 man zone looks like.
Great credit should go to all of our players that ran hard and persisted to hold on to a 1 goal win maintaining our unbeaten start to the season.
Toby Exton 5 – 2
Sammy Anglicas 5 -0
Dillian Hubbard 2 – 3
Luca Lettieri 1 – 4
Zac Boulter 2 -0
Michael Petrich 0 -1
Hamish Johnson and James Butler played great defence all game to hold Altona out.
We are at Home this week against MCC/ Caulfield.
Coaches Report – U’14 – Gary Campbell
Malvern Vs Chadstone
Result – Win 20 – 8
It was a great win for the U’16 team and one of the most pleasing aspects was Our BUMPING, instead of chasing sticks we Bumped / Bodied. It worked really well so let’s keep doing it.
Elmo was Super in Goals for the first 3 quarters and Guy finished off. Nick M and Luke were awesome in Defence highlighted by Nick getting a great ground ball after battling with 3 Chadstone players.
Joey played a great Captains game running Middy for nearly the whole game.
Our attack was very smooth with Jordy and Paul taking control. They had some great dodges and proved the fact that the Bigger the Defencemen , the easier they are to get by.
Chris who ran Midfield for the first 3 quarters slotted very nicely into Defence for the last Quarter.
Toby Jardine was “chaffing at the bit” to get into attack and when he got there he did not let us down.
At one stage he took on 2 Chadstone guys, got the ground ball and gave the ASSIST of the day.
Our Rising Star from round 1 Rupert was on fire again Starting in D and then running amok all over the field.
Captain Darcy took complete control of the face off. Darcy got the team going with his bumping and at one stage bumped the biggest guy on the field (but unfortunately came off second best!).
(Well done Darcy, perhaps you should ask your Dad (Coach) to buy you some shoulder pads).
Guy was relentless off the Midfield and in Attack and it was great to see Guy take some Bounce shots. They really worked.
One of the highlights of the game was Elliott’s Goal in the last quarter – amazing!
The Rising Star Award for round 2 goes to Nick Chapman. After getting his “Bum Kicked” for raking at the ball, Nick went on a rampage getting possession after possession and setting up heaps of goals and assists. Great job Chappy!
The team really missed Alex, Nick K and Hugo hopefully we have you all back next week.
Coaches Report U’12 Red – Zac Ansell
Malvern Vs MCC
Result – Win 20 – 1
This Saturday, Malvern reds played MCC, winning 20-1, the team showed excellent team work skills and communication. Intercepts and excellent passes, were at a high all day. The kids showed us that they were ready to play, and after half time excelled at playing on there left hand. Kudos to Ashly for going hard at the ball all day, Kaleb and Maddie for being everywhere running up and down, and an excellent job to the rest of the team, who really worked hard, as we had no subs on the day. It clearly shows that they are all going to go far.
Coaches Report U’12 Black – Steve Bown
