The column will be called ” Naked on the crease. ” in dedication to a call made by a Senior member of the club calling out ” Naked on the Crease” whilst watching a game on the weekend. They then tried to correct it by saying ” Well they were ”
Match Reports
State League
Malvern 26 defeated MCC 9
Won 5 lost 0 for season
Nick LeGuen and Nick Longo were rested for the game with minor injuries but we still went in to the game with 14 quality committed players. A terrific first half of great running and focus on our game styles in both defence and attack had the score line at 15 to 2 at the main break but Murray and l new it was going to be hard to keep the team focused in the second dig, and as we had feared an 11 to 7 second half score line flattered us as we fell back into old Malvern bad habits of penalties, rushing the man with the ball and getting careless it in attack resurfaced.
It is true the game was over at the main break and the coach is never happy, “but”…Williamstown, Surrey Park and Footscray will come at us for 4 quarters and we need to be ready to play out whole games no matter how far in front or behind we may be.
The positives on the day were Trav Croll with 9 goals and Shane Koppens with 6 goals and 9 assists along with Josh Naughton 2 and 2 have become a powerful forward structure we can now build a score around, James Garret continues to grow into his new role and Patty and Luca are not far away from being a real force in the middle and our defence when focused is as good as any around.
Eltham at Eltham next week and places in State League will be earned over the next part of the year.

A win for us this week against Eltham. Malvern were in control right from the start, but didn’t play the way we should have. Some old bad habits creeping back in, against The top teams we would have been pulled apart. We didn’t really take much away from the game

This week’s game was a blowout with a big win over Melbourne High School 26 -0. They were no match for our many years of experience and great stick skills. To MHS credit they fought hard all game, showing great athleticism and determination. Toby was missing this week, so Darcy stepped into defence with a long pole, together with Nick Maher they threw some well timed checks putting the opposition under a lot of pressure and clearing the ball time and again.
Our new recruits Alex and Mav had their best game yet, giving us great drive around the ground and on the scoreboard. They are getting better every week. The midgets otherwise known as Ben, Tom and Azza have stepped up each week from the U14’s to help us out. We are a bit short on numbers but these boys are giving us a lot more than just a bench. They are well respected members of this team playing in key positions and roles all over the ground. All three of them were instrumental in this win.
Paul was moving better this week after his recent knee injury, contesting many ground balls and playing the last quarter in goals to give Alex some game time on the ground. Alex jumped into midfield and won key ground balls, had four or five shots in succession, got decked twice and came off the ground at the end of the game with a big smile on his face. Well done Alex!
Jordy, Nic and Rupert stood up and took control of the game early, bringing the rest of the team into the game. It was a great team game with everyone passing and contributing right across the ground. This was evident on the scoresheet with 9 different goal scorers and many of those goals assisted. A big thanks to Gaz as special guest coach this week whilst Curly was off scouting the opposition. Next week we have a bye and a well earned rest.
