Malvern vs MCC.
Result – Loss 10-13
After a very poor training session Thursday and a Coach’s gut feeling that we’re not right mentally after a 2 week break proved spot on with a poor showing and attitude against a team that has now shown us twice this year that you win big games of Lacrosse by being disciplined, skilled, and having never say die attitude.
Our warm up, shooting on goal and overall discipline was the worst for the year and at times just plain selfish.
It is enormously frustrating to see such a talented team which is capable of so much, being beaten because the other side is more disciplined and simply wants it more…
But the great thing about sport is we all get another crack at it this week and Caulfield after beating us at last time will start warm favourites and rightly so.
This is now our last stand to make the playoffs and we have 5 days to get back to the focus, effort and discipline we had beating Surrey Park before the break, if we do this, everything else will take care of itself………
Division 2
Malvern vs Williamstown.
Result – Won 14-8
B Grade
Malvern vs Williamstown.
Result – Won 10-0
At home (Town Hall) for only the second time this year the team came up against last years Premiers Camberwell, who earlier in the year inflicted our worst defeat for the season 16 – 1.
The Cold weather and very soggy ground conditions did not deter our faithful and enthusiastic band of supporters from once again providing great confidence and encouragement to the team.
Being the Club we (Malvern) are and wanting to ensure the game is played both in good spirit and good faith, we agreed to play 8 aside (instead of 10) as Camberwell were short of players and we also waited more than 15 minutes past the scheduled start time for the Camberwell goalie to arrive.
The Malvern team was missing Romy (injured), Maddy (Ill) and Jaimie (working) but gained the services of Tara.
It was a tight game in the first half with plenty of scoring opportunities for both teams. Whilst Camberwell only led by 1 goal at half time their experience gave them the ability to get goals every time we mounted a challenge.
The second half proved an entirely different ball game. Ang began to dominate in the centre and Eleanor and Tara were picking up the ground balls to give us constant use of the ball.
Everyone lifted their intensity and we generated lots of run from defence creating many fast breaks and scoring opportunities.
Leanne had a great game in goals making a number of crucial saves and Donna playing Defence stopped a number of their fast breaks. Our defence put pressure on the ball carriers and forced Camberwell into many turn overs and pressured shots on goal.
All our middies ran hard, Sarah, Ang and Katie used their speed to advantage carrying the ball up the ground and chasing into defence, whilst Jess, Ally and Rochelle fought hard contesting and winning lots of ground balls.
Nina combined well with all the middies in attack and probably touched the ball more times than she had all year. She presented well to get passes and moved the ball on to keep the attack moving.
In the end it was the aggression and experience of Eleanor and Tara who broke Camberwell’s back and the team went on to win by 3 goals.
It was by far the best team effort for the year given the quality of the opposition. All the hard work on the training track is starting to pay dividends as our stick work is improving but more importantly we “blitzed” Camberwell with our attack on the ground balls.
Well done to all the team members on a great win.
You should all be proud of your attitude, enthusiasm and improvement.
Under 16’s
Malvern vs Williamstown Fearons.
Result – Loss 17-9
The team was ready to play with the arrival back of Sammy Anglicas after 6 months playing in the US.
We started very well winning a healthy share of the faceoffs and moving well in offence.
Willy were a little stunned by our aggression all over the ground.
Darian Jones was having a super first half in goals turning back many willy attacks.
Everyone was contributing and we scored some lifting team goals.
Nick Chapman was feeding well finding open Malvern team mates. Half time saw us leading 9-7, a well earnt lead after the good quality effort.
The third quarter saw us take the foot of the pedal. Willy rallied putting our defence under constant pressure . At 3/4 willy lead by 2.
Our final 1/4 just filtered away, no talk in defence and we let Willy score some easy goals.
Dylan 4g 1assist, Joe 1g 1a, Hamish, Sammy and Gary 1goal each.
We must work hard and long on our understanding of how to play defence.
This week we are home to MCC. A must win game as we are now out of the final 4.
Under 14’s
Malvern vs Chadstone.
Result – Won 24-5
The Under 14s were at Home to Chadstone. After 2 weeks off everyone was keen for a game.
We had 3 out sick or injured so we called on Tom Bown and Ben Chapman to come up from U 12’s.
Malvern dominated the face off all day giving the team first use of the ball. Attack was working well but our shooting was a bit rusty.
Some of our goals were from 3 or 4 quick passes which is great to see in U14’s. Defence was solid all day and our “Sniper play” (Doubling) was very good.
The talk out on the field was very good but still needs to be a bit louder.
All in all a good solid 4 point win.
Under 12 Reds
Malvern vs MCC Reds.
Result – Loss 4-16
With more players than I have ever seen at an under 12 game, the Reds had plenty of enthusiasm going out to play MCC’s (only) U12 team.
The fact the MCC team had a couple of larger players did not deter the Red’s from getting in there and having a go.
With the coaches rotating the whole team every 2 goals we made sure everyone got a good run in all the positions of the ground.
The best part of the game was our teamwork, which was evident by us matching MCC’s goal total in the 3rd quarter.
This week we are at the Town Hall, so hopefully a win is nearby as the kids just keep getting better and better each week.
Goal Scorers – Paige Currie 2 Goals, Jenna Croll 1 goal, Noah Putna 1 goal and 1 assist, Ellie Putna 1 assist, William Rice 1 assist, and Abhi Pael 1 assist.
Most importantly we had an outstanding effort by our two goal keepers for the day, Ellie and Matthew, they saved numerous shots and kept the score close. Fantastic game!
Under 12 Blacks
Malvern vs Camberwell Sting.
Result – Won 11-10
