State League Report by – Glenn Meredith
Malvern Vs Footscray.
Result – Loss 8 – 10
After all the pre season running and preparation you can’t match the physical demands of an actual game to test your fitness and skill levels needed to play our great game, and with that in mind our first hit out in 2011 was against the number 3 ranked team in 2010 “Footscray” and was always going to be a great test for us as an emerging club in 2011, the 10 to 8 loss against a much higher ranked opponent was a terrific improvement on the 2 x 10 goal beltings they gave us in 2010 but we left the game knowing it was there to be won but for several costly turnovers especially in the last quarter when we drew to within 1 goal and l thought we had them all but dead in the water.
“Our defence with the great work of Murray Keen is starting to get the picture of what it takes to be an miserly unit against high quality opposition holding them to 10 goals and shows what an effective unit we are becoming down back but need to keep improving and working harder and smarter. Special mention to Luca in the gage for an amazing job making 18 quality saves on the day.
It was our attack and my department that seemed a bit lost on the day with on field communication poor until the last quarter but as it was the first game these bugs will be ironed out at training over the next 2 weeks, 2 players asked me why l didn’t call time outs late in the last quarter, it was because in my opinion we were running over the top of them and the bickering coming from the Footscray bench was confirming this, l didn’t want to halt our run and again apart from 3 or 4 glaring turnovers which put them back in attack in a 4 minute period in the last quarter l thought we had them cold. You have to remember this is the first game in 2011 for the coach as well and may or may not have been the right decision but gut was telling me we had them and to let the game run.
Over all a great effort and the game was there to be won by us all as a unit, we are a much better team in 2011 but need to keep working hard and the rewards will come.
Training is on Tuesday and Thursday we have a lot to go over and start the preparation for the number 2 ranked Surry Park.
Division 2 Report by – Rod Finnigan
Malvern Vs Footscray.
Result – Won 19 – 4
We had a great start to the season with a win over Footscray 19 to 4, we didn’t quite know what we would be in for this year dropping out of division 1 and being the first game you don’t know who is going to show up. As it was a pretty good team showed up.
It was good to see some players we hadn’t seen in a Malvern shirt for a while like Tim Naughton and Dillon Hubbard, good to see some new people in a Malvern senior team, like Adrian Hubbard, Jeffery Pfeifer and Alan (PINKIE) Sweeney. We also had a rookie in goals young Geoff Finnigan, he got his goal keeping career off to a great start with a shut out in the first quarter unfortunately he couldn’t keep them out all day and they slipped 4 past him, not bad for his first game in the cage.
We had a bit a family affair with the Hubbard, Coleman and Finnigan brothers all playing. Overall the team was quite balanced with old and new players. Cuzza, Mickey and Timmy keeping Greg Mollison and Richard Tonelli out, for you younger players one of these guys is older than Rod Ansell.
Tim, Shannon, Rod, Jeff P, Jeff C, Joey, Jesse, Adrian, Pinkie and Dillon all had a run around in the attack or midfield it was really a brisk walk for some of them.
We had 8 different players on the score sheet a very good team effort, highlights of the game were Pinkie getting his first goal in field lacrosse, Big Jake Coleman with 4 and Geoff in goals.
Goals went to Jake 4, Shannon 3, Adrian 3, Rod 3, Jeff Pfeifer 2, Dillon 2, Pinkie 1 and Tim 1.
Really good team effort guys, keep up the good work.
Womens B Grade Report by – Rod Ansell
Malvern Vs Surrey Park. (03/04/11)
Result – Loss 12 – 3
The teams second game was played at Altona against last years B Grade Runner’s Up – Surrey.
The Surrey team is their main team and boasted years of playing experience (not to mention some well know Lacrosse names – Tillotson, Cody, Ellis, Mounsey, Purdie).
Once again the Malvern supporters were in attendance in full force and gave the players much needed confidence and inspiration to perform to the best of their ability.
And perform they did, one goal down at half time and Surrey were in a “state of panic”!.
14 players hit the field with Ash Kalman and Nina Reid making their debuts.
Julie Croll volunteered to be the team goalie for the game and was making some great saves (the bruises will go away eventually!) and was ably supported by Leanne (“Bruiser”) Currie and Jess Noakes in defence.
Tara Healy (one of the Malvern original juniors) also played her first game and made her presence felt all over the ground with her hard running and great contested ball work and finished off with 2 goals.
Eleanor and Romy once again provided the experience and control around the ground and brought many of their team mates into the game.
Confidence had grown from the previous week and knowing they were playing and matching a very experienced Surrey team kept the players spirits and endeavour at a high level throughout the game.
Unfortunately fitness and Surrey’s experience took over in the second half and the team eventually lost 12 to 3 however, as we have seen on may occasions, the scoreboard did not reflect the evenness of the game.
Once again Ange and Sarah ran hard through the midfield all day and our younger brigade of Ally, Katie and Maddy tried hard all game and are constantly growing in confidence.
We also had solid contributions from Donna, Jaime and Nina rotating from the forward line through the midfield to provide some relief for the players when they needed a rest.
The teams fitness, skills and confidence is growing by the week and if this trend continues the team’s first win will not be far away.
