State League Report by – Glenn Meredith

Malvern Vs Altona.

Result – Won 14 – 9

State League played Altona at home and in a hard fought contest we ran out 14 to 9 winners.
It was a good win in a tough contest that showed what is required to win games at State League level.
Our contested ground balls were great all day with Squeeka, Shermo, Josh and an evergreen Paul Cook leading the way. We had a defensive plan that we managed to follow for most of the day which paid big dividends and more importantly our shooting on goal was at a high level, overall we fully deserved our win.

Every player contributed on the day and a tough season for the club came to an end on a positive note. I have said all year that we are not that far away from the top teams and proved that several times throughout the year including when we beat Eltham in round one and pushed every team in the competition hard at some stage.

In a difficult year when we only had the same players on the field twice for the season and if you include blooding several 16 and 17 year olds the year the future will be ok and successful if we continue to work hard as a group.

I do believe we are a better team now than we were at the start of the year and the players now understand what they must do to be successful at State League level. As I say to them regularly – “No one is going to “give you” anything,  you must go and get it”.

Division 1 Report by – Brendon Farrell

Malvern Vs Melbourne Uni.

Result – Loss 22 – 6

Division One last game of the season was away against Melbourne Uni.   We were expecting a close game as there was only two goals in the last encounter we had, unfortunately Melbourne Uni had three Americans that were not there last time and this made a huge difference to their team.
Each quarter we were outclassed by their fast passed midfield and well drilled attack.
The quarter by quarter score was 2-5, 2-10 5-17 and 22-6 Melbourne Uni’s way.
Goal Scorers for the game were Daniel Keisler 3, Brad Currie 1, Rod Finnigian 1 and Shannon Bell 1

Under 18’s Report by – Josh Naughton

Malvern Vs Chadstone.

Result – Draw 9 – 9

The U18’s needed a good result leading into finals and put in a good effort in the first half before falling away slightly and ending up with a nerve-racking yet disappointing draw 9-9.
MCC U16 Nicholas Sheedy scored 2 goals as did his brother Sam Sheedy. Anthony Jenkinson, Callum Gerrard, Jesse Coleman, Sam Johnson and Sam Maher each scored one goal.
This week a big game against Eltham in the first semi final looms large, its win or go home!!!!!

Under 16’s Report by – David Joy

Malvern Vs Williamstown.

Result – Won 15 – 5

Our second semi final started with a pretty tight first quarter. Again we controlled the ball from the middle and Dillan swerved his way through the Williamstown defence to score twice to open an early lead.
Like so many times through the season once we warmed up our production rocketed with 5 more goals in the 2nd quarter.
Our defence was putting pressure on Willy forcing them into taking long shots which Darcy saving them easily. Our constant pressure when we were a man down worried Willy.
At half time we had kept Willy scoreless whilst putting 7 goals on our score board.
Having a full list or 14 players gave us a huge physical advantage.
Scoring was tight in the 3rd with Malvern scoring 2 goals to 1 to lead 9-1.
The game opened up in the final quarter with a lot of turn overs but we managed to out score Willy 5-4 to finish with a 9 goal win.
Everyone played very well and all our middies Lewis, Michael, Zac, Hamish were great .
A big game from Dillan saw him finish with 7 goals 1 assist. Other scorers were. Toby 3-2, Lucca 1-3, Joey 2-0, Sammy 1-1 and Zac 0-1.
We were very strong in the face off again but really the match winners were our defence backed up by all the middies.

Now before I forget I wish to thank Rod Ansell for Umpiring us all season and as usual from a Malvern person an extremely high and constant standard, very honest and a great credit to our club and the game.
Also I must thank the “lovely” Rita Joy our bench official and a “real pro” (many years in the game).

Our Grand Finally is on September 4th at 12 noon at Eltham.

Under 14’s Report by – Gus Campbell

Malvern Vs Footscray.

Result – Loss 12 – 5

We were beaten but we still have another chance!
Although we were beaten I think we played really well in most areas although our shooting on goal let us down.
This week we play Eltham and the winner gets “another crack” at Footscray.
Lets make sure it is us again as I think last week we may have been a little intimidated by Footscray.
Now we know that we are as strong physically and mentally as anyone.
It was a good strong team effort and we had more than 50% of the ball throughout the game.
Thanks again to Guy Exton who was brilliant in the cage.
This weeks Risers go to Guy and Darcy.

Schedule for this week.
Practice Tuesday 4.45pm till 6.00 pm.
Practice Thursday 4.45 til 6.15pm ( then dinner together at the Clubrooms.)
Saturday 8.30 am at Footscray for 9.30 am Start.

Parents Please advise availability for all sessions.
It was great to have everybody there on time last week. It gave me a chance to talk to the boys before the game.

Good Tough Malvern Lacrosse each and Every day.

Under 12’s Black Report by – Steve Bown

Malvern Vs MCC Red.

Result – Draw 13 – 13

The sun was shining and the field was flat and dry.  Everyone was excited to be playing.  Conditions were perfect for the last game of the season and it was the most exciting game we played all year.
As a coach it is very rewarding to see each player’s skills and confidence continually improving.  The true talent and sportsmanship we have at Malvern was on display for all our spectators.
Crisp, accurate ball movement from one end of the field to the other.  Team work and encouragement from the oldest to the youngest player saw all our players leave the field at the end of the game, happy with the result whilst the opposition was throwing their equipment.
Tom B and Ben got us off to a great start with 5 goals between them.  Paige showed everyone how to start the game in the middle with some accurate passes.  Nathan rebounded the ball out of defence with ease all game.  Tom M found space near the goal, dodged his defender and ripped a shot past the goalie.
After doing his last tour in the goals, Aaron joined the midfield line and didn’t take long to make his mark on the field.
Play of the year goes to Will Martin, with scores even and 40 seconds on the clock, Will who volunteered to go in goals, made the most amazing save.
Scorers: Tom Bown 5 goals 2 assists, Ben Chapman 4 – 5, Aaron Currie 3 – 0, Tom Martin 1-1, Lachlan Bown 0 – 3 and Nathan Wat 0 – 1.
Well done to all the Malvern Red and Black U/12 players for a great season.
Thanks to all the parents for their support.

See you on the park

Under 12’s Red Report by – Zac Ansell

Malvern Vs Knox.

Result – Won 12 – 6

Last weeks game was the final under 12’s game for the season as we don’t have finals.
We were up against Knox who had beaten us by a substantial amount just weeks ago.
The whole team came to play and were ready to do what ever it took to win. After a hard goal for goal 3 quarters, we walked away with a win in our last game 12-6.
Everyone played better than they had in any other game and demonstrated the improvement they made throughout the season!
Kudos to Ashley and Jenna for going hard at the ball all day, Dylan for being a super goalie and everywhere on the field. Also to Tom, Maddie, Kaleb, Allie and Mackenzie for running up and down the field all day and never complaining about it once.
Under 12’s Red has been an awesome team to coach and have made life fun throughout the season
Cheers and Thanks to Dale Croll for helping coach this year and to Julie Croll for being our number 1 Scorer!
