Under 13’s girls
The U/13 team were very excited and nervous on Sunday morning for their first ever Grand Final appearance. We had some bad news on the Friday before that Jacinta would not be able to play in the Grand Final as she had her district basketball try outs, leaving us with ten players. It was a very tough choice for Jacinta but the team understood her choice and thank you Bina for playing with us all season, helping us get to the Grand Final and being our ‘lefty secret weapon’. We roped in Ryan who filled in for us when Lochie and Meg were in America at the last minute so we had one on the bench
We had played Footscray twice during the season and they had beaten us both times, however this was the first time we had played them with a full team. They came out firing as we knew they would using their two gun players to do all the work, and scored on us early
The girls (and Boys) did an amazing job of running hard, and trying to shut down their key players, making sure the match ups were right and fighting hard for every ground ball
At one stage we were 4 goals down and at 3/4 time it was 5-7
The team stayed positive and held Footscray goalless for the rest of the regular time period, with some excellent defence work and finding the back of the net when shot was on. (FINALLY!!) Everyone played so well!, Jenna Emma and Brooke with their interceptions, Meg and Paige taking Lochies long bombs form their goal circle in our attack, Victoria and Brianna with their awesome ground balls and hustle and Sarah , Ryan and James running up and down all game to cover their players
It was clear to me that we wanted it more! As the buzzer went for full time the scores were 7-7, after a brief explanation of ‘overtime’ and lots of squeals we took the field for two 3 minute halves. Footscray scored early and we followed not long after, we made some changes to our defence line that proved vital, and noticed that Footscray started to play defensively instead of continuing their attacking play
With 9 seconds left in overtime Paige had the ball and Ryan was open in front of goal, Paige passed to Ryan who was using a girl’s stick for the first time! He fumbled the ball but picked up the ground ball under pressure and shot it past the goalie as the buzzer rang. It was a long two seconds for the umpires to sound the whistle and call the goal ‘all clear’ then again to signal the end of the game
Huge celebrations followed along with a drenching of the coach
In true Malvern spirit our team, understanding the Footscray girls devastation, were excellent sports offering handshakes and hugs to the girls that were visibly upset, I have often spoken to the girls about all the awesome benefits of playing a team sport, the camaraderie and friendships, the team work and commitment and not only how to be gracious in defeat but also to be humble in victory and I was a proud coach when i witnessed our team enjoying their celebrations but also being respectful and compassionate of the losing side
An amazing end to an amazing season girls, to come from winning two games last season to be premiers this season, with most of you playing for a maximum of two seasons! I couldn’t be prouder of you all, I enjoyed coaching you all so much, such a fantastic group of kids, so kind so dedicated so funny! A huge thank you to our awesome team manager Nina and Leanne for reluctantly taking on the reffing role and helping me on Grand Final day when I thought I might go into heart failure, Thanks Ladies xo Another big thanks to our boys – James for playing all the home games and finals for us, Ryan for stepping in last minute and scoring the winning goal!! And our Lochie for being the goalie for the last two seasons and being the ‘General’ on the field helping the girls out and telling them where they should be to get on the end of his famous clears!! Make sure you all get a copy of the DVD everyone!! See you all Sunday for Junior Presentation.
