Division 2 (Footscray) |
Malvern | Vs | Williamstown |
State League Report
Malvern vs Williamstown.
Result – Loss 14-11
Williamstown is always the hardest road trip in Victorian Lacrosse and a club l really admire, but getting 4 goals posted against us in the first 6 minutes was not in the script I had in my hand. As a team we could have packed it in then and there, but instead we saw the quality and spirit of the Malvern Lacrosse Club players dig deep and throw the next 6 and have Williamstown second guessing their own game plan well into the second quarter.
Pretty much goal for goal after that and only a 3 goal burst from Willy again in the last quarter provided the difference in the end result.
Two Williamstown players commented to me after the game it was the toughest Lacrosse game they had played in 2 years including last year’s final series and that we have some great kids coming through and are well on the way back.
I agree, this year we had 10 players 22 or younger play most of the season and l believe this team went forward even though we didn’t make finals, It is a group l believe in and would love to be involved with again in 2012 if the job is available.
You can never really blame injuries in a season of sport, but it would be an understatement to say the Gods didn’t smile on us in 2011 with one or more key players missing almost every week. To still press for a top 4 spot right up till last game is again a great sign for the club and players going forward. Next year’s focus is to win more games early and not put ourselves in an awkward position mid-season of having to win 8 in a row.
Many thanks in 2011 to Collin Molloy, (Ron, Patty, Sean, Kate, Emma), Tanner Smith, (Lulu,) Dave Gal and Greg Higgins, along with your parents and friends back home in America, you can now add “Malvern Lacrosse Club” to the long list that is proud to call you their friends.
Thanks also to our home umpire Phil Garrett who is there every week, Trevor and Anne Jenkinson for being Team Managers by stealthJ and our loyal supporters (wags), rain hail or shine it’s great to see you guys there every Saturday supporting the players and the Club.
Presentation night is for all you guys and every one that worked in the kitchen and around our great club this year.
Good luck to the Div. 2 team this week in the playoffs and we all need to get to Footscray to back them as they did us last week…

Division 2
Malvern vs Altona.
Result – Won 17-9
Under 16’s
Malvern vs Eltham Surrey.
Result – Loss 10-7
Our first semi final was against Eltham-Surrey in a sudden death playoff.
For the first time since round 2 we had a full list of players on the field.
Our first 1/4 was very productive with good ball movement and sound defence we scored 4 goals to Eltham’s 1. With Shorty and Coco containing the Eltham Surrey lefties we were able to get constant use of the ball on our forward line. Unfortunately we could not score goals whilst our opponents picked up 1.
Taking a 4 -2 lead into the long break brought out the Eltham-Surrey defensive pressure in the 3rd, their defence applied a lot of pressure causing numerous turnovers, thus giving them more opportunities in their attack line.
Eltham-Surrey scored 4 goals to our 1 for the 1/4.
Into the final 1/4 we continued to turn the ball over and Eltham-Surrey seized their opportunity to score 4 goals to our 2 with the final score 10-7.
Our goals scorers were Joe and Nick 2 goals each with singles to Sammy, Darcy and Dylan.
Thanks to Darian Jones, Gary Fleming, Bruno Lombardo and Adam Townley (Coach) from Caulfield helping out this year.
Also a big thankyou to Jordan, Darcy, Nick and Paul from the under 14’s for playing with us all year helping top up numbers.
Also many thanks to Julie Blakeney for scoring and washing the tops all season.
To Nick Le Guen for helping out coaching and Rod Ansell for umpiring through out the season – many thanks.
I would like to wish the players every success for next season and hope they stick at it and look to improve their skills and fitness.
Your Coach David Joy signing out.
Under 14’s
Malvern vs Altona.
Result – Won 25-8
The 14s finished top of the ladder after the home and away and went to play Altona for the chance to go direct to the Grand Final.
The result – we blew them away 25-8 with some unbelievably accurate goal shooting.
The Altona crew threw some Rough House tactics at us but our kids ignored it and just played harder.
Nick Maher took a nasty cheap shot but got himself back on and just dominated the defence.
Nick C dominated the face off again and ended up with 11 goals.
Jordy was all over the place and got a few but his defensive game was superb. Jorda stripped a heap of them.
Darcy chipped in with 8 and a lot of hard Ground Balls.
Rupert was given a tagging role and did a great job.
Alex was really solid in the cage and Guy and Luke stood up in front of him.
Dillon almost got a goal and will be busting to break through in the GF.
Maddi ran hard and got some great ground balls and her cutting game was great.
Kaleb travelled from Tocumwal and busted his butt all day and got some great Ground Balls.
Pauly as usual was moving the ball around and was dangerous all day getting some points on the board.
Last but not least I need to mention Toby. Not only did Toby play a great game but he was also Punched 3 times by an opposition player.
Toby did not retaliate and just walked off smiling, then we punished them by getting a couple more goals whilst that kid was in the Penalty Box.
Great Leadership shown Toby.
The General TEAMWORK was fantastic and we will need to keep it up.
All in all Malvern Too Strong, Fast and Skilful.
We have 3 Practice sessions to go and then we take on either Camberwell or Altona in the Grand Final.
Cheers Gus
