Seems to be of late, nothing but bad news with another of the Malvern Family passing on.
Here are some words penned together for those that didn’t know him….the late John Addison
Vale John Addison.
John was not a regular State league player, but he was a legend within the club for his tough approach to the way he played.
Certainly all Malvern Players who played with him were secure in the knowledge that John had their back.
In the 1978 B Grade Grand Final during the warm up John sneezed and put his back out and was taken away in an Ambulance which was a big relief to the opposition as they “Feared him Greatly”
Johns back issues were due to an injury sustained when parachuting in Full Army Combat Gear and landing awkwardly.
In another game in 1977, B Grade were playing Williamstown at the Newport Power Station Ground and unfortunately for us, the Williamstown A Grade had a bye and the sideline was full of the Willy army.
We fronted up with 12 players and there was a number of skirmishes during the game.
We managed to win the game and as we were walking off 3 players from Willy started to walk toward and taunt John.
Ron Ox Twomey and Alan Roley from Willy quickly stood in front of the three players and said “ Hey guys anyone but him” !!
Those players were very lucky that day as Addo just smiled at them and said “Come Back Later and Bring 10 of Your Mates”.
John was an Unarmed Combat Instructor in the SAS and had many great stories to tell about his time in the service.
From there John worked with the Tax Office where he was entrusted to look into the affairs of many an underworld figure until he retired due to health issues and became the Secretary of the SAS Past Members Association.
John battled MS and Cancer for about 20 years and unfortunately the Cancer finally got the better of him.
John was one of the many Addison family members highly respected at Malvern Lacrosse.
Over the years Luncheons were organized amongst Past Players and called “Lunch with Addo” days.
John will be missed but he will “Always be Remembered” by MLC and anyone who played against him. RIP Addo. ”Strike Swiftly”
