Great start to 2015 by MLC.
Lots of hard work by many people paying off and seeing Great numbers in all grades.
It has also been pleasing to the response I have had in regard to all registering on Sporting Pulse. We have still got a few more people to do this so let’s get it done.
NEW SPONSOR – EQUILIBRIUM SPORTS AND SPINAL CLINIC
Malvern has luckily secured a new Sponsor. Equilibrium Sports and Spinal Clinic, located in the Goodlife Fitness Club on the Corner of High Street and Tooronga Roads. The Club Member will receive a rebate from every visit made so long as you say you’re from Malvern Lacrosse Club. Gary, the Osteopath from Equilibrium will be up at the club in the coming weeks, so do not hesitate to visit him. A couple members of the club already visit him regularly and can speak glowingly of his services.
BOB RUSSELL CUP – THIS WEEKEND
Next week we have games at Home and as far as State League goes we play Eltham for the Bob Russell Cup. Bob was a Malvern player in his heyday but moved to Eltham many years ago and was instrumental in starting Eltham.
We won it last year so let’s keep it in our Cabinet.
FEES REMINDER – $100 DUE BY ROUND 3
Just a reminder to everyone that $100 of your subs are due by Round 3.
As mentioned earlier MLC will be enforcing NO Pay NO Play this year as it is vital that we have the money to pay Lacrosse Victoria as they will NOT give us credit.
I have also previously stated that if any member has difficulty paying to contact me in confidence and we will sort something out.
Once we are at the club rooms training Karen will come up to the Clubrooms on the first Thursday night 5.30 pm -7pm for the people that want to pay cash Too Easy!! “Go the Red and Black” Gus.
COACHES CORNER
We had a great turnout at Coaches Corner last Saturday with every team at the Club represented. As stated previously at 5:30 each Saturday afternoon we will be holding coaches corner where we, as a club, go through all the games of the day and the girls from the past Sunday. This is a great opportunity for all members of our club to come together and bond as one.
It is expected that ALL senior players attend coaches corner each week…you might even win one of the president’s awards, just ask Riley Suffolk!
BLACK UNDERSHIRTS
As previously communicated, it is an expectation that all players of Malvern wear a black undershirt under their playing tops.
SOCIAL EVENT
At this stage the first event is trivia night on May 30. Keep an eye out for updates in future Malvern Mail. While that’s a while away, and I’m currently looking into a date for a “Casino Night!”. We are just trying to juggle in appropriate dates once the fixtures are more ‘settled’ and work out where it fits in the calendar.
Lauren
THE (333) BARROW OF BOOZE
Once again we are running the ‘legendary’ Barrow of Booze.
Donations will be accepted and encouraged from the senior teams as we try to raise some extra funds for the club.
This is one of the main ways to raise money for much needed supplies to run the club. Your help in this would be greatly appreciated! More details next week
TOWN HALL
We can confirm that we have received access back to the Town Hall ground for training as of the 21st of April. This will be a monumental day, so do not miss out on the festivities we have planned! “Good Tough Malvern Lacrosse Each and Every Day” Gary Campbell
Game Reports
State League
Malvern 13 def Caulfield 1
Win 13 to 1 Its always hard through the first half of the season with knowing strengths and weaknesses of other teams and with a strange build up training at Chadstone because our ground is being resurfaced didn’t help putting any normality into the lead up.
I thought all along with lefty Drew Bracken (2 goals, 2 assists) playing his first game and Will James (6 goals) playing attack would allow Josh Naughton (2 goals, 4 assists) more freedom to fill the right side that our front 3 attack players gave us terrific balance, then throw in Anthony Jenkinson, Sam Anglicas and James Garrett and 15 goals was the target. What was most pleasing on the day was the defence led by Shepherd, Lilburn and Steve Fisher shutting down Caulfields 3 starters and L.S.Ms Craig Brown and Lance Coleman and short stick D Toby Exton containing any middy threats was first class holding them to a solitary goal was fantastic.
Special mention to Paddy Mac for controlling the middle for most of the day and Goalie Dave Gal for a 700 save rate and 85% clear record on the day.
We had Darcy Campbell and Nic Chapman play their second State League games and the 17/18 year old kids were terrific and they will be eased further into the team over the year but both have 300 games careers ahead of them.
If I had to give 3,2,1 I thought Toby Exton, Dave Gal & Will James all had a really good game today.
Good start and lots to like but lots to work on as well as there are better teams waiting ahead of us..

Division 1
Chadstone 10 Def Malvern 6
Round 1 2015. There was a mix of experience and youth. Congratulations to rookies Thomas, Rob, Toby and DC on their first game in D1. It always takes a few games for D1 to settle into a groove and we always seem to get a State league team round 1. We started well and were competitive in the first half. Finished at 4 all. The third quarter was poor and basic skill errors in transition are what cost. There were encouraging signs in the last. If we can get a few of the younger guys to training we will field a very competitive team this season.

Division 3
Malvern 10 def Camberwell 0 (Walkover)
Div 3 received the 4 points from Camberwell, due to a walk over.
Brad Skepper and Brendon Farrell were going to have their best games so far this year……………….I couldn’t pick who was going to be better.
Cheers, Rod F
Women’s B Grade
The season opened on a warm and sunny day against an inexperienced Chadstone team. We started with 11 players and got off to a flying start scoring on the first play which set the tone for the first half. Plenty of opportunities were created as we slowed the ball down to try and work everyone into the game.
The second half was much the same although Chadstone began to play with more cohesion and created a number of scoring opportunities but the game allowed us to alternate players around the ground and get some good game time into all the players.
Final score – Malvern 18 defeated Chadstone 2 Special mention to Emma and Sarah Davie who both played their first “Open age” game and acquitted themselves very well. It took some time for them to gain confidence playing against older players and with checking / contact etc. but they did really well, ran hard, competed for the ball and both scored.
Romy finished with 5 goals, Sarah 4 and Tara 3 were our multiple goal scorers and it was good to see Tarryn and Ivy get on the scoreboard as well as a number of scoring opportunities for Lauren (don’t worry it will happen!).
Kate & Nina ran hard and gave maximum effort as usual and were great contributors all over the ground and Bruiser had an excellent season opener in goals making numerous saves and half field clearing passes, without her efforts the score would have been significantly closer.
Thanks and congratulations to Claire Jenkin a new player to the team who took the field in the second half and got some valuable game time and experience.
The only downside for the day was our shooting (no need to say anymore!), which we will continue to work on.
U17
Our U17’s ventured out to play Footscray’s U17’s for their first game.
We got there in plenty of time but as the game was getting close to starting, it was obvious that we were only going to have 8 players to take the field.
Footscray’s numbers were slightly better with about 9 or 10.
We asked the opposition coach Chris, if he would consider playing 8 on 8 to which he agreed in a gesture of good will and sportsmanship.
Once the game was starting, an overflow of U15’s appeared and bolstered Footscray’s numbers considerably. Chappy took to the goals and was aided in defence by Max, Harry and Sam who all shared in switching with Tim as he was playing FOGO but couldn’t actually get off the ground due to low numbers.
Thomas and Az rotated on the midfield and forward line along with Fenton as needed.
The game went on and was a very even contest which saw goal for goal scoring on both sides.
Half time and we had been helped out by 2 of our U15 boys (Mitch & Lachie) which brought our total to 10. Tim jumped in goals which let Chappy loose to take some of the pressure off the other guys. When the ref asked Footscray if they wanted to play 10 a side, Plumby refused and said “let’s keep it the same”.
This enabled some of our guys to get some much needed rest which they were quite happy with. End result was a 1 goal win to Footscray and the tone of the game was great to watch. Very pleased with the guys first hitout as they didn’t have the luxury of ‘resting’ very often and persevered in the ‘slightly warmer’ conditions Our supporters commented on how good the game was played from both teams.
A big thanks to Footscray as that was greatly appreciated on our behalf and for supplying an extra ref as ours was delayed. With reports that Alex, Seb and Danny will be available Saturday we should be in a better situation.
Good Luck to Tim as he competes in the U18 Carnival starting this week in Adelaide! Boppa & Drew
U15
Walkover by Altona
U15 Girls
The U/15 girls had a nervous start playing against some bigger, more experienced players but did really well in their new team with the Caulfield girls. Brooke, Emma, Sarah and Paige played amazingly well and were a huge part of the great plays the team had throughout the game. The lost by a few to Williamstown but as with the 13 girls, some more games with the new team structure and I have no doubt the team will do very well this season.
U13
Kids mixed up really well with mcc, and had a great time. Lost four games and beat Surrey Park, which is great considering. Only one of our kids played this level last year, so we are young and have. Lot of potential. James Arnold was the player of the day. Good roll and face dodging.
U13 Girls
The U/13 girls kicked off the season in style with a 16 – 3 win over Williamstown Gold. The team is a combined team with girls from Caulfield, Surrey Park and Malvern.
U11 – Malvern Red & Black
Malvern U11 took part in a round robin competition with Chadstone and Camberwell. Fielding two teams, Malvern’s youngest division started the season well, ensuring a fun first outing for all involved, with players mixing well within their own and the other teams present. Malvern Black came away with two wins and a loss to open the season, with all players working hard to move the ball in to space and find team mates. Special mentions must go to Riley Suffolk for opening the scoring tab for the club in 2015, and being well disciplined and hard working on the field, also congratulations to Will Rice for his hard work spent out of position and in goal, and Mathew Arnold for stepping up and having a great first game.
Malvern Red had a fun morning. We had 4 girls – Danielle, Alex, Bella and Meg along with first gamers Doug and Joe. Thanks to Alex for standing in goals for the second and third game. She was feeling a little under the weather but stood tall and made some awesome saves. There was great transition goals scored with everyone getting involved. Rumour has it Danielle and Alex might have a few games on Sunday in the u13 girl’s team.
The morning it was a great first round for Malvern under 11, with exceptional sportsmanship and high standards being set by the club’s first teams of the 2015 season.
Well done to the 12 Malvern players. See you at the town hall on Saturday morning Toby and Squeak
Special Mention!!
As mentioned above, Riley Suffolk (U11) was the 1st Malvern player for season 2015 to get a goal! Congratulations Riley, keep up the great work!! Apologies for the “size” of the report, we’ll try to curb everyone’s enthusiasm….but then again…that’s not a bad thing is it? #red&blackfamily
