State League Report by – Glenn Meredith
Malvern Vs Footscray.
Result – Loss 6 – 10
Ron Alaimo Cup day this year against No 2 ranked Surrey Park at Surrey Park is always a big day and players on both sides are to be commended for playing the game in a terrific spirit with hard tough contests all over the ground that Ron would have loved.
From the coaches point of view to have a 16 year old kid that usually plays attack (Luca) filling in in the cage and to also be missing Long poles Cam Scott, Dale Croll (Captain) and quality Midfielders Nate Leader, Josh Naughton (Captain) all through injury and then to lose James Garret (Best and Fairest) 2 minutes into the game with an ankle injury was always going to be tough, the thought of a 6 zone and try and keep them to under 20 goals was discussed on the bench by Murray and myself.
To hold them to 10, our 6 on 6 defence on Saturday was fantastic, led by Luca in the net with long poles Brendon Farrell, Dan McGrath, and first gamer 16 year old James (Harry) Butler a great follow up to last weeks terrific effort against Footscray, both weeks against quality opposition and both weeks prove we will mix it with all of them when we get back our 4 injured starting line up players and add in some much anticipated international talent as well. We have now set the defensive standard and structures we must achieve each week from this point.
Pat McGrath is emerging as the player we all know he will be, he and Steve Bown controlled the middle and the hard running of the wings by them with Shermo, Barnsey, Browny and Butler on a hot day was nothing less than terrific and what is expected at this level.
Our attack had Rob Chamberlain playing his first game for us this year and at times included (due to injuries) veterans Brad Currie, Adam Barnes, Steve Bown, and along with youngsters Callum Gerard and Anthony Jenkinson was not as functional as it should be, but hard to be critical with so many forced changes through the week and Surrey Park do have 2 Australian quality defenders.
We do continue to commit unforced errors when pressed clearing the ball in the last 2 weeks and along with some poor shooting habits, as a group which this week will be addressed at training, I know we are 1 win and 2 losses, but the overall effort and scorelines reflect our emergence as a contender in 2011 make no mistake.
The next 4 weeks will determine our season starting with number 8 ranked Melbourne next week, but if we bring the same disciplined effort everything else will take care of itself.
Division 2 Report by – Shannon Bell
Malvern Vs MCC.
Result – Won 12 – 11
I was expecting a much easier game than what we had this week after our 19-4 win over Footscray the week before. We didn’t have Dillon and Corey Hubbard , Boppa (S/L), Tim Naughton (sick) and Tim Laidlaw. With Fazza and Butler both playing in the firsts, we only had Micky, Zac and the “Rookie” Jeff Campbell playing in defence with Shasti (first gamer from Knox) running off the wings.
Geoff Finnigan and Paul Sperling shared the goal keeping duties with a half each. The defence put in a great effort to hold out the MCC attack, especially when they had the likes of Cam Sherrard running around the forward line. To keep him to one goal for the game was a fantastic effort.
After the first quarter it was 2 all with Toby Exton and Jake Coleman throwing the goals. Pinkie came out in the second quarter and threw his second goal for the season. I am sure he will get plenty more this year with his determination for the ball, especially when the ball is being contested on the ground. He just needs to keep two hands on the stick and not handle the ball!
Jake came out and threw three more goals making it a 4 to 1 goal quarter and giving us a 3 goal lead, 6-3 at half time.
Coming out after half time you could definitely see we were missing our “ball taxi’s” in the “Hubbards” from the week before. It was quite a warm day and us “oldies” were feeling the pinch (I know I was!!) We threw the first goal of the quarter but MCC turned the tables throwing four goals to our one making the scores level at three quarter time.
Lining up for the fourth quarter I asked Jake to stay on the field for the entire quarter and it paid dividends. I have been drilling into him that if he picks the ball up in an unsettled situation, wherever he is on the field, to go for the cage no matter what. He bagged four and was on fire finishing with 8 goals and one assist for the game. I hope he is starting to realise that if he keeps his cool and stays out of the penalty box that he will have plenty of more games like he did on Saturday. After a five goal to four quarter we won the game by one goal, 12-11.
Even though it is Divvy 2 and we just want to have some fun and a few laughs, we need to value the ball a lot more and cut out the silly turnovers that give the opposition the chance to score. Simple things like moving our feet when passing and receiving the ball and not standing flat footed when you don’t have the ball. Jake finished with 8 and 1, Pinkie 1 goal, Toby Exton 1 goal, Rod F 1 and 1 and myself 1 and 1.
We are two from two so far but sit third on the ladder with only percentage separating us from Altona and Williamstown. I am hoping we can find another couple of goal throwers from the woodwork in the next couple of weeks as we have Chadstone away this week, Altona at home, then Williamstown and Eltham both away, so a pretty tough run over the next four weeks.
Womens B Grade Report by – Rod Ansell
Malvern Vs Camberwell
Result – Loss 1 – 16
The teams third actual game (we were previously the recipient of a walk over – our first win!) was against reigning premiers Camberwell.
Already missing Tara, the injured Romy took over goal keeping duties for the day and apart from a “lazy leg that kept kicking out” did a pretty good job making a number of saves and receiving the mandatory “goalie bruises”.
Eleanor did most of the centre work and scored our only goal. Donna Kelly and Sarah Bown also took a few centres for the first time and did quite well which will give us additional options throughout the year.
Donna Kelly was also showing the benefit of an extensive fitness campaign over Easter and did an amazing amount of end to end running and gathered quite a few ground balls (amazing what confidence does!)
Sarah Bown also was doing much of the midfield running and had a couple of good shots but unfortunately went down with an Achilles injury and missed most of the second half.
Our defence of Leanne Currie, Jaimie Jenkinson and Jess Noakes did a good job and we restricted Camberwell’s scoring opportunities particularly in the second half to eventually lose 10 – 1, but as often happens the final scoreline did not reflect the effort, endeavour and attitude of the team.
Angela never stopped running and picked up many ground balls and created lots of transition opportunities into our attack where Julie Croll and Katy Benson tried hard. Julie had a number of scoring opportunities to be denied by last minute checks from the defence.
Nina also ran hard during the game and was well supported by Ally Campbell and Maddy Croll who played her best game of the season. Maddy picked up numerous ground balls, ran hard up the ground and carried the ball with confidence whilst under great pressure.
Once again the Malvern supporters were in attendance in full force and gave the players much needed confidence and inspiration to perform to the best of their ability.
Caulfield Lacrosse Club welcomes both Malvern and Chadstone Lacrosse Clubs to Caulfield on the 14th of May.
Each of our respective clubs are playing at least two games at Caulfield that Saturday and we would like to invite Players, officials, club committee members and friends to our Presidents day scheduled for that day.
