State League: vs Williamstown 3-21

Malvern were off to the west once again this time in a face off between the leagues strongest team Williamtown ,with a depleted bench due to injuries throughout the club it was always going to be a tough battle .
The MIB went out there showing no fear and a strong will to rattle the towners. When the game got underway, it was williamstown who struck early with some quick goals and some sharp ball movement ,but with a strong defensive show from Malvern they werent going to make things easy for the seagulls . The end of the first quater had williamstown up 5-1 with James ” THE MASS UNIT ” Garrett putting one in with his Blistering speed and fancy foot work from behind the cage , with once again his patented move of the goal line extended reach around to bury one past the keeper like he wasnt even there.
Second Quater. Williamstown continued to dominate the possession of the ball but the Defence from Malvern did a great job holding them out with a ton of knock downs ,clears and a great performance between the pipes from Jay ” STEPPIN UP ” Baskaran with some big saves and nice clears .Malverns attack had the ball and kept control but couldnt find the back of the net .With an early Man up Oppotunity in the second when Williamstowns goalie got the 1 minute penalty, Malverns special teams unit was sent out to put one past the the replacement keeper ,some nice ball movement and a slick pass from Chris “LARRY ” Baker to Travis Croll saw the man up unit put one in. The next few plays had the ball going both ends of the field and again the defence line held out the on coming williamstown for more oppotunities for the attack line to run the ball and set up some scoring chances.
There were a couple more Man up Oppotunities for the MIB with only one more goal coming for the Black in the form of an ( side note:a possible career end for one williamstown defender ) on crease indian pick up to back of the net goal from Travis Croll . with the back line and goalie holding strong the Quarter ended up 3-2 the 3rd and 4th Quater had no result from malvern as far as scoring but with an ever shrinking bench everyone who was able to play dug in and continued the pressure and hard work,in the end the score was 21-3 but everyone who was out there knows that everyone stuck together helped each other out and played together till the very end ..so the score result didnt go our way but everyone can hold their heads high knowing we didnt give up ..lets take that into this weeks game and get a W at the end of the this weekends game against Moreland.
Division 1: vs Surrey Park 18-5

Division 1 had a hard game against Surrey Park going down by 13 goals but there are many promising signs from the younger players in the team, Jake Coleman was our main faceoff person for the day that had the demanding job of holding up Cam Mclachlan from Surrey Park in the faceoff, Mez Clough fought hard all day in the midfield and was unlucky not to score, Oliver Johnson gave 110% all day.
We lost first time division 1 player Courtney Scanlan early in the first quarter with a hand
injury which meant he couldn’t hold onto his stick and couldn’t return for the rest of the game.
Apart from the younger members of the team a good effort was put in by Dave Gerrard again returned to Division 1, Shannon Bell scored 3 and a welcomed return of Tim Laidlaw scoring the other 2 goals in the first quarter.
Division 3: vs MCC 10-7

Div 3 ventured to MCC with a number of players being promoted to Div 1.
We started the game with 14 players and Brad Skepper was almost impassable in goals in the first half. There were only 1 or 2 goals separating the teams all day and the defence did a great job restricting MCC’s scoring opportunities. Mike “Shorty” Petrisich had to leave at half time which impacted our bench rotations however fine efforts in the midfield from youngsters Toby and Luca continually provided the forwards with scoring opportunities. Joffa Campbell playing as if he was still in the 80’s scored a couple of team lifting goals in the last quarter to clinch a hard fought victory.
Under 18’s: vs Melbourne High
School 18-2
Josh Naughton wrote:
The U/18s had an easy win on a beautiful sunny day out at Western Oval cruising to an 18-2 win over Melbourne High School. After we showed up with just 11 players and they only had 9 it was decided we would play 8-a-side, which made for a very open free flowing game.
Unfortunately in our 11, only 5 were short poles so we shuffled a few players around which paid off immediately when Courtney Scanlan scored a great goal off a cut.
Rowan Anglicas started off quickly with 4 of his 6 goals coming in the first quarter helping us to an 8-0 lead. More of the same followed and our defense was rarely tested. Our other scorers were Billy Exton who finished with 6, Callum Gerrard who had 4, Jesse Coleman who had one assist and made great position all day, and Dominic Barker who scored his first ever goal to cap off a great day running in the faceoff and midfield.
The defense was well manned all day by a combination of Anthony Jenkinson, Jake Baxter, Robert Marcak and Joel Hourigan-Richmond who also had a go on short stick. Jay
Baskaran had little to do all day in goals. This week we will have a bye, following that we will play away at Chadstone.
Under 16’s: vs Footscray 11-11
Under 14’s: vs (Game 1) Caulfield 10-0 (Gamw 2) Altona 9-0
Under 12 Black: vs MCC 2 11-5
Under 12 Reds: vs MCC 1 9-1
