A little thanks..

He’s probably going to hate this but we’d just like to say a small thanks to Gordon Elder. Along with a select few, Gordon continues to support the club with his ‘annual’ donation. It’s great to know that club legends still support the clubs future with acts like this.

Game Reports

State League

State League played Caulfield last week and we seemed to be almost at Full Strength with the 16 players we put on the field.
Starting off with a couple of nice early goals it appeared we would take control of the game.
Pat and Tim were dominating the F/O and we had 80% of possession but scoring seemed to get harder as the game progressed with a couple of easy misses and 3 pipes we should have had a big lead. The last quarter was to be our down fall going 2 up with about 7 mins to go and then not capitalising on another Easy miss, the game should have been over but it was not.
Special mention to Toby Exton who had received a check on the Knee so hard the other guy broke his stick but play on was the call.
Special mention to Will James who got hit Head high and had his chin split open, also to receive a play on call.
Getting possession with 1.40 to go and scores level we had trouble getting the ball to a middy and over the centre line to call a time out and have last crack we were called offside after we had called the time out in a Blind Freddy call.
We had so many chances to win this game but In the end we got run over and lost 13-12.
Next Sat we play Footscray at home and will be working Largely on our defence during this week, knowing if we improve that area we are up for a win.
Let’s ALL get along and support State League as all other teams have a bye.
Gus.

Division 1

This week was Caulfield at Caulfield.
With players returning, it was reassuring going into the game with options.
We kicked off the game and immediately noticed Caulfield’s enthusiasm, which saw them get a couple of goals ahead early. We could all see that many of us were still rusty, and getting any momentum seemed impossible.
There was no questioning our work rate, nor intent, however getting a feel of playing together we saw much of our good work come undone. Many passes were going high, and when you look straight down you saw stationary feet.
A time out in the second quarter delivered a message of keeping it simple, and building towards being level and gradually ahead in the third quarter.
With Cam Mac working hard in the middle, Sammy providing some energy and the rookie Cuz motoring all over the ground we had stability, and this allowed Fintan, Aaron, Rupert and the tall and scary left hander Rob Lowe get into the game.
With nine (9) minute remaining in the last term a timeout was called, we were ahead 13-8 and Paul was having a ripper of a game in the cage.
The message was simple – pass the ball around, on our terms, pick the best option and then take the option with intent.
This simply didn’t happen and we were fortunate to weather the storm and win 13 -12.
We must reflect on that period and work towards our upside, as we played 65%.
Next week a bye and then Melbourne University.
PS – much thanks to Rod Ansell for refereeing.
With thanks,
Adam

Division 3 Men – (30 April 2016)

Malvern 13 Footscray 1
Malvern’s 3rds finally got a game after a couple of false starts and gelled straight away.
The new look div 3 side benefitted from a couple of father son combinations of Chris and Mitchell Baker and Steve and Tom Bown who contributed 8 of our 10 goals.
Also pleasing was the 7 goal scorers including Travis Dawson and Mal Reid who both scored their first goals. The defence was also solid only letting in one goal. Overall a good team game that can only get better.
Best: Chris Baker, Stephen Bown, Danny Taylor.
Goals and Assists: Danny Taylor 3 and 2, Tom Bown 3 and 0, Chris Baker 2 and 2, Stephen Bown 2 and 0, Mitchell Baker 1 and 2, Mal Reid 1 and 0, Travis Dawson 1 and 0.

Division 3 Men – (7 May 2016)

Malvern 14 Caulfield 1
Malvern travelled to Caulfield for their round 4 game with 2 senior debutants of Lachlan Bown and Ryan Godber. The game started slow but got going in the 2nd quarter with 7 goals to make it 10 nil at half time. The opposition tightened up their defence to restrict us to 4 goals while scoreing 1 themselves. Overall a good hitout with the father son combos of Chris and Mitchell Baker and Stephen and Thomas Bown scoreing over half the team’s score. Ryan Godber and Lachlan Bown featured among the best players in their first senior game as well. The real test comes in 2 weeks when we play ladder leaders Eltham.
Best: Mitchell Baker, Chris Baker, Ryan Godber.
Goals and Assists: Tim Laidlaw 4-0, Thomas Bown 4-0, Stephen Bown 2-2, Mitchell Baker 2-2, Chris Baker 1-2, Ryan Godber 1-0.

Malvern 19 v Caulfield 6
It was a great fun game for u15 this weekend.  Josh (reluctantly) stepped in goals this week and made a number of great saves. Most players tried different positions this week and the most popular was defence.  House and Mick lent a couple long poles for the game and it was difficult to find attackmen towards the end of the game as everyone wanted a go. Justin, James S and Cubby showed particular talent with the long pole. Well done to James ripping a nice goal. Ben played a lot of midfield and had a number of great shots, finishing with 2 goals. Garrett helped with 1 goal and 2 sweet assist. Ryan dominated the face off finishing with 5 goals 1. Lachlan gave up his long pole to run some short stick middy and play some attack scoring 10 goals 5 assists. Great game boys. See you Thursday at training

Under 13’s

The boys have been improving game after game and against Caulfield they showed a lot of spirit.
The whole team defended well and the bash brothers Tom and Ted enjoy making their presence known.
Tireless running from the midfielders and shout out to James Suffolk and Brandon Tran for leading by example.

This week was against Surrey Park at Caulfield.
Given the mateship we have and hard work we put in at training, there is always confidence that we can match it with any team.
In U 11’s it is so much more than that, and with Surrey a player down, we were always happy to accommodate to make sure all the kids playing in the game have a great lacrosse experience.
Surrey borrowed a player from us each quarter and we got into the game.
From the start it was for all to see the work rate, skills and fun that our kids possess.
We welcomed Matt Arnold in for his first game, and as an older player, his presence with the hard working and dominant Will Rice and Liam Barnes we had the ground covered.
Amalie Mansfield continued her possession count from the week before, and couldn’t be stopped from picking up ground balls. Alistair Duell continued his love as a goalie and made some great saves, with Seth Lewis (thanks Slats) and Riley Suffolk getting in there and getting the ball. Riley’s improvement over the last year is a credit to him.
What would a game be these days without Toby Bown. Apart from barracking for the Western Bulldogs, his cradling on both hands and sprint when he has the ball is fantastic. Mick please explain?
Malvern 14 – Surrey Park 2 (Next week – Altona (away))
PS Five (5) of the nine (9) players in our team are left handers
With thanks
