Grand Final Day @ Malvern

To make this day successful, we need as many helpers as possible to make sure everything runs smoothly for the clubs biggest day this year.

We have a spreadsheet at the clubrooms with time slots and jobs that need to be filled. If you can ‘offer’ just an hour of your time to help, the committee and the club would be very thankful. Obviously if you can put your name to more that’s awesome!

A link to see whats available is posted below.

Camberwell Win 14 to 10

With the game of no real significance in the run to the finals and with all due respect to the Camberwell side it was a great opportunity for us to run some aggressive patterns like 10 man presses and push out in D to extend our poles especially after half time, and while it may have cost us 4 or 6 goals Camberwell may not have scored if we played our standard defence we learned a lot about ourselves and will be of good use to us in the finals commencing this week.

Billy Exton played his best game for the club and l believe now understands that goals and assists aren’t important in what we require from him and he should play a big role from here in 2015. Robby Maddux did what Robby Maddux does best and while we rested Harry Cotter for most of the game he should now be cherry ripe for this weeks first final, was also great to see young Cam Shepherd running around back to full fitness and more importantly injury free for the first time in 2015.

Our man up is the focus of the week and needs everyone on the same page but is running around 80% efficiency and as Malvern is a dodging side that draws a lot of slides and penalties it will be important to maintain that percentage from here.

P.s Congratulations to Brad (Boppa) Currie on his Life Membership of the Malvern Lacrosse Club, extremely well deserved reward for a top bloke.

Division 1

V Altona semi final

It was a very tough and intense game. I expect nothing less from Altona in a final. Altona got the jump. Leading 3-0 early. It was a battle all day. A great second and third quarter saw us take control of the game and lead by 4 at three quarter time. Their over aggressiveness helped as we were able to capitalise when they were in the penalty box. It was an even last quarter and we were able to hold off for a 11-8 win. Williamstown next week .

Division 3

2nd Semi Final

Malvern 19 v Caulfield 9

Malvern played Caulfield for their first final on Saturday and had an almost full team for the first time this year. The team was switched on from the start to put the score on the board early. Three first quarter goals from Tim Laidlaw helped us to a 5 to 2 score at the first break. Caulfield came back in the next quarter to narrow the lead to 2 goals at the half time break. The 3rd quarter saw us extend the lead to 4 goals after outscoreing them 4 goals to 2. The last quarter was the best when we ran over the top of Caulfield outscoreing them 7 goals to 1 to run out winners by 10 goals. It was the best team game of the year with the juniors doing a lot of hard work for the seniors to put the score on the board for a change. Next week we have to continue the good work all round the ground to have a chance against Williamstown in the preliminary final.

Goals and Assists: Tim Laidlaw 6 and 0, Anthony Bosisto 5 and 1, Rod Finnigan 3 and 2, Tom Bown 2 and 2, Aaron Currie 2 and 0, Paul Keisler 1 and 0, Rob Lowe 0 and 1.

Best: Tim Laidlaw, Anthony Bosisto, Tom Bown, Aaron Currie, Paul Speirling

B Grade Women’s

The B Grade women went up against Surrey Park on Sunday out at Footscray. This was the 2nd meeting of these 2 teams and the crowd support was larger than normal expecting this to be a

great battle.win this and you go straight into the Grand Final!

The tempo was up from the get go and Surrey made it clear of their intentions to get that weeks rest. The Malvern women tried valiantly to stop their momentum but were unable to match it with them with their many avenues in attack. Only having 1 sub on the bench made it a very tiring game for the women and players out of the team due to injury is always going to hurt.

The end result of 12 – 5 was no reflection of the effort the women put in and their pain was visible at the final whistle.

That just shows their drive and desire to do well.  They get another game to fine tune their skills before they meet again in the GF.

This weeks game is ‘Eltham’ at Chadstone so get down and support them on their drive for a Grand final berth!

Under 17’s

Melbourne Uni away was going to be the build up to finals and the team had said “No holding back!’.Good!

Unfortunately for Melb Uni, the boys ‘unloaded’ and when they do, not many teams can stop them.

Fine tuning skills, plays and defensive set ups were the plan of attack for the day preparing for the first final against Footscray.

The game was cut short in the 3rd quarter (25-0) when a MU player was bumped over in the course of play and his head hit the ground hard. An ambulance was called to ‘make sure’ he was OK and later reports were that he suffered a mild concussion.

Proper equipment is paramount and was an obvious asset on the players side for him not receiving a worse injury.

This week we get to test ourselves as to how well we can play as a ‘unit’.

No ‘show boating’, just disciplined lacrosse will be our focus on our way to a Grand Finals playoff!

Under 15’s

First Final V Camberwell. (1v2).

Our form in the last few games have only been average. Allowing the other teams to stay with us during the match before accelerating away has kept everyone on their toes. This is a talented team which has not yet played to their full potential. Camberwell has been a tough team all season and this would be the fourth time we had played them. Warm up was solid as there were a lot of nerves. We had a lot of the ball early and a number of shots without being able to score. Our first goal was scrappy. Camberwell then scored and it was level again. The ball went up and down the field a number of times with some good attack and defence from both teams and some great goalie saves before we scored again.

Under 11’s (from previous week)

Lightning struck not twice, but for a third and final time last Saturday at Camberwell Lacrosse ground, as the participants in the last lightning carnival assembled to bring the under elevens’ season 2015 to a close. The Reds have seen many changes to their roster over the course of the season, but when it was time to take the field, Riley Suffolk, Fred Jackson, Loup duPont, Ben Godber and Julien and Amelie Mansfield were left to fly the flag.

The day was a superb testament to the improvement the Reds have made over the course of this year. Last time they faced the round robin format, they came out proud of a solitary win, but the results from this Saturday were very different. Hard running, exceptional teamwork, positive attitude and rapidly developing skills allowed every one of the players to work together on both ends of the field, sharing every position around over the course of their five games and supporting each other every step of the way. At the end of the day they had won four of their games and drawn the last, to emerge with the eternal glory of the 2015 pennant for the Kangaroos division of Victorian Under 11 Lacrosse.

Toby Exton and I couldn’t be more proud of the spirit we’ve seen from every player to have been part of the Reds’ race to victory this year, and we thank everybody at the Club; referees, fellow coaches, managers, president Gussa, and all the tireless odd-jobbers who made it.
