News – 24th July 2015

From the President.

Hi All,

Good result for all of our Senior teams last weekend.

Interesting to note that we put 46 players on the Park over 3 Men’s

Teams and the Senior Girl’s were fortunate enough to recruit a new player.

All of our Senior teams are in the four at present with B Girls still undefeated on top with State League and Div 1 hunting down a Top 2 slot. Div 3 back in the four and just needs to keep winning to compete in Finals action.

Last week at the club was our annual Comedy Night and those who were there will tell you it was “A Blast” with a great line up of top comedians including our very own “Alan PINKY Sweeney”.

Pink wooed the home crowd and was also responsible for organising the line up. Great CRAIC AL.

Barrow of Booze time is nearing so once again I remind all of those who have Not donated to get something in to help our Major fundraiser. I will be asking ALL senior players to SELL 10 tickets each which is very easy to do.

Spit Roast Night is coming up on Saturday 15th of August so start to make plans for this annual culinary delight. This was huge last year and does require quite a bit of planning.

Make sure we all start to let all of our teams and parents know about this great feast.

Cost will be $12.50 per head or a Family ticket of 4 for $40.

Family tickets will Only be available as a pre purchase, and I advise everyone to pre purchase as there will be a limit on the amount of people we can cater for.

Prepay via bank transfer of register your payments at the bar.

Once again I remind all of those who have NOT paid their subs to do so Now !

We have bills to pay and we need these monies in to cover our debts.

Coaches it is Now time to check with all of those in your team to make sure they have paid.

Remember if you have not paid your subs by Finals you will NOT play.

Regretfully I report the passing of Lynn Spiers last Sunday.

Past member of MLC and mum of Sharon, Roy and Mick

and grandmother of Stephanie, Jade and Rochelle.

Our thoughts and love are with you all.

Rest in Peace Lynn.

Finally as we near the Business end of the season I urge all coaches to step up the hard work and really get our players even fitter cone finals.

Regards to All.

Game Day Reports – 18th/19th July

How did your team go?

State League V M.C.C Win 21 to 7

We ran solid attack patterns all day and to throw 21 goals was pleasing but more important was the way we scored them, Josh Naughton was outstanding and controlled and organised the attack with his personal tally of 5 and 2 great reward for effort.

Patty McGrath again dominated the middle, Cam Sheppard’s front hip defence on Michael Sagl M.C.Cs best attack player was fantastic and while Robby Maddux 5 and 3 led our contested Ground ball count again James Garrett 1 and 4 stepped up and grabbed several tough ones himself to fill the midfield void left by Toby Exton who we will welcome back this week.

I would like to acknowledge Travis Croll who l dragged on and off the field all day so our match ups in attack were right and his 3 and 1 for effectively half a game was great to see for him.

M.C.C commented to me after the game what a terrific player No 9 for us is, Harry Cotter who caused massive problems for them not only with the 4 and 2 on his own but he set up many more opportunities with that terrific split dodge to the right he possess !

We have Caulfield away this week and percentage will be critical in the run home so we must play with the same aggression and contest and play good tough Malvern lacrosse again, we can still finish anywhere from 1 to 5 as it is all in our own hands in what is becoming an amazing fight for a finals berth which is great to see in Victorian Men’s lacrosse for some time.

Div 1 v MCC  12-5 win

D1 is travelling along well after a shaky start to the season.  Players have been moving up and down through D1 all season.  D1 lost Barnsey this week to D3 and gained Zac.  It was a solid game holding them to 1 goal for the first 3 quarters.  The core of the team has been stable and is starting to gel together.  Our attack is pretty simple move the ball quickly and don’t stand still.  The first and third quarters were what Im after and looked really good when we execute the game plan.  Jordy was exceptional with 3 goals and Jay was outstanding as always in goal.  We welcomed back House from Australian duties this week.  Each week has been important and this week is no exception with second spot up for grabs to the winner.  The club is in a good place with all senior teams in the top 4.

Div 3 V Melbourne University Win 11 – 4

Malvern went to 3rd on the ladder with a solid win over Melbourne Uni. The game started slowly with M.U. grabbing the early lead but Adam Barnes levelled the scores by quarter time.

The second quarter saw us start to get going to outscore M.U. 3 to 1.

The third quarter was our best with a 5 to 0 score which sealed to the game for us with the last quarter being 1 all. Thanks go to Adam Barnes for providing drive from the midfield and to Paul Keisler for his first game in about 10 years and the 5 under 17s who arrived just before halftime to help us in that big 3rd quarter.

Goals & Assists: Adam Barnes 4-2, Anthony Bosisto 2-1, Tim Laidlaw 2-1, Aaron Currie 1-1, Rod Finnigan 1-0, Rob Lowe 1-0.

Best: Adam Barnes, Tim Laidlaw, Anthony Bosisto, Aaron Currie.

U17 V Eltham/Moreland/Surrey Win 23 -0

What was penciled in to be a good hit out, turned into a very 1 sided affair.

To our curiosity, E/M/S had suited up one of their better ‘onballers’ in goals. This left the workload for the others in E/M/S to be quite large considering the good spread Malvern has.

Malvern took control from the get go with some great passages of play during the game for most of the part.

There was some moments in the match where lazy work ethics crept in but were soon rectified with some guidance……..or shouting. ; )

Sam,Harry & Alex are working well in defence with loud voices and hoovering up the loose ball.

Ben in goals wasn’t troubled much as winning the centre draw was controlled by Thomas,Tim & Aaron.

Great to see Danny back from his ‘International’ duties being a key on the attack too.

It only got a bit messy in the last quarter, when our team umpire Joey had to come off due to injury. Having only one ALRA ref and a ‘newbie’ from E/M/S officiating, the standard dropped and the control was minimal.

As wayward checks were left to go uncalled it was obvious that the home team where slightly ‘mifted’.

I was very impressed with the team for not retaliating under the ‘new style’ of play as that will hold you in good stead come finals.

Fintan had a cracker along with Max ‘stealing’ every flyball going his way. Also nice to see Seb back and look forward to Jake & Alfred’s return shortly?     #MIA

U15 v Surrey Park 18 – 1 win

This week we were joined by a new friend Adrian who is in Australia from Germany as part of the exchange student program.  He fitted straight into the midfield and scored an awesome goal.  It was a good overall game.  The boys are starting to understand attack structure and ball movement.  The defence line is working well and they are very good on picking up the contested ground ball.  Next week will be a big test against Camberwell.  We will need to be at our best if we are to win.  Shooting will be the key in this game.

U13 Girls

The u/13’s had a great win this week against Camberwell.

Paige Currie played an excellent game, intercepting loads of passes in defence and also scoring three goals for us! Meg scored two left handed goals which was great to see, unfortunately one was disallowed due to a crease violation but it’s great to see Meg becoming more confident with her left hand too.

It was a great team game from all the girls, we are currently 5th and a favourable fixture makes it possible for a finals berth despite our rocky start to the season.

U13 Boys

On a chilly morning the U13’s ventured over the bridge to Altona.  The game started with Altona scoring a few quick goals and despite being ten players to their eight the Malvern/ MCC combined team were 5-1 down at 1/4 time. Freddie Forster being the one to put us on the scoreboard.

The second quarter we maned up better, halted their flow of goals and went into half time 3-6. Our two goals coming from James Suffolk (after a great roll dodge) and Billy Jarvis.

Altona kept us scoreless in the third, while they piled on six goals – but the boys fought back in the fourth with two more goals to James Suffolk and another to Billy. The team finishing 6-14 at the final siren. One of the Altona boys scoring eight of their 14 for the day.

Score assists came from James Arnold (2) with one each to Brandon Tran and Justin Mitchell.

There were some great intercepts in defence – by Will Jackson, Justin Mitchell and Joe Shobbrook.  These boys also picking up some great ground balls and having a couple of runs down field.

We held in there for two of the four quarters, but could not quite put it together for all four.

U11 Blacks

The blacks headed out to Altona, with a great game on the cards.

Off to a slow start it took a quarter for us to get up and running. Poor passing and unwillingness to work for each other were a feature of the first quarter and resulted in a 3-4 quarter time deficit.

After a break where we all knew what we were doing wrong we changed our approach and were rewarded with seven(7) goals in the second quarter and a 10-7 half time lead.

We simply worked harder, thought more about our games and were more clean in our skills.

This dominance continued in the third however we let Altona back into the game slightly in the last allowing four (4) goals in.

Malvern Blacks ran out 17 – 13 victors.

It was great that each player not only scored goals but had assists as well.

A big welcome back to Alex Jackson.

Next week a home game.

Regards

Adam Barnes

Lost Property!!

Hold the phone….there’s a disturbance in the force!

‘Cubby’ a.k.a Brandon Tran has lost his hoodie! It is a size 14 ‘zip up’ type which was last seen in the changerooms. If you have accidentally put it in your bag can you please return ASAP as Cubby hasn’t got his usual ‘swagger’ as he struts down the street without it…
