Trivia Night Fundraiser for Dave Gal

Dave Gal is holding a Trivia Night fundraiser for his Denver world championships efforts this Saturday Night (21 June). It is $15 Entry which includes a great night of trivia and finger food. I’ve also heard that he has plenty of prizes on offer and drinks will be at the always cheap Malvern prices. It would be great to see all of the #redandblack family on Saturday Night. Don’t miss out on this can’t miss event.

Barrow of Booze

This year we are running the Barrow of Booze fundraiser again, its
a great opportunity for the club to raise some much needed funds, so what we is help from everyone. What we need from everyone is to donate a bottle, 6 pack or slab of something to put in the barrow. Additionally, we will need all senior players to sell at least a book of 10 raffle tickets. The tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. It would be great to see everyone help out the club – bring some booze up and sell some tickets. We will be drawing the barrow at the Spit Roast Night on the 23rd of August – so lock away this night for future events.

Visitors

We had two of our American Recruits arrive on Saturday, Chapin Speidel and Michael Morris. If you see them around make sure you introduce yourself and grab them a drink or two. Both Chapin and Michael are staying with Lance ‘Rooboy’ Coleman at the moment, so a big thanks to rooBOY for putting them up – so while you are shouting our American friends a drink, maybe think about grabbing one for rooBOY too.

Aussie Representatives from Malvern

As everyone is probably aware, Malvern has quite a large contingent in the Australian Squad/Panel/Team travelling to Denver for the World Championships. Congratulations and best of Luck to Glenn Meredith, Murray Keen, Rod Ansell, Karen Meredith, Romy Ansell and David Gal who are representing Malvern on the world stage. If you see any of the above people around the club, make sure you wish them all the best for the World Championships – most of them leave Saturday 28 June. I am sure they will all do us proud.

Chocolates – Fundraiser

We have handed out boxes of chocolates to the junior parents to sell. If you have finished selling your box please return the money to the club on Thursday after training, or Saturday mornings. we also have additional boxes to sell if you are feeling like you wish to sell another sneaky box to your family and friends.

Coaches Corner

Just a reminder we have Coaches Corner at 545 each Saturday Night at the Clubrooms where we go through all the games from the u11 boys to the State League game (including our girls on the Sunday). So if you haven’t had a chance to come to the rooms and hear about how the teams went on the weekend it would be great to see you up there.

Call for HELP

As everyone is aware, Malvern is a volunteer based club. This year we have a number of our loyal club servants travelling overseas in the next few weeks so we will be short on numbers for all those small and large tasks around the ground. It would be great if anyone has a spare hour or half hour that they could ask any of the Committee Members what they can help out with. For example, we will need volunteers to run the BBQ on a Saturday Morning, work behind the bar and canteen on Saturdays and help ensure the rooms are in a tidy order. Please think if you have a spare moment to help out, and we thank you in advance.

Match Reports

State League

State League Lost 13-14 in OT against Caulfield
State League welcomed four debutants to the game this week with Nic Chapman, Darcy, Cam Mac and Michael Morris. The first quarter was tight with both teams strong in defense but Caulfield snatched two goals early and Malvern had to fight hard to get one goal before the quarter whistle. Malvern played some great lacrosse in the 2nd quarter scoring six goals in the quarter. Our six goals were scored by separate players with Billy Exton, James Garrett, Joe Blakeney, Sam Anglicas, Rowan Anglicas and Nick Chapman.
Maybe, it was best that half time never came, as after half-time Malvern really struggled and didn’t value possession and let Caulfield back into the game. The final quarter was a slugfest not helped by pouring rain and a rapid drop in temperature which even had the scorers shivering at their desk. Most Malvern supporters had already fled to the cover of the grandstand. The final 10 minutes of this quarter saw tit for tat goals by both sides with Caulfield in the lead minutes from the bell. Fortunately Malvern were able to even the score close to the end of the quarter and hold off Caulfield for a draw at 12 all. However, in overtime, unfortunately, Caulfield managed to score in the dying seconds to manage a 14-13 victory.

Training could be a bit of fun for State League this week.

Division 1 – Bye

Division 3 Won 13-3 V Bendigo

Trail blazing their way out to Sunny Bendigo was a few cars loaded to the brim with the “dream team”. ; )
On board was everyone aged from 14 to….well not 14!
Having for possibly the first time ‘3’ father/son combo’s in one team
(that’ll get people talking) and a total of 14 players, was the healthiest Div 3 team to play Bendigo at home for a while.
Going through the game the young guns took their place with Thom and Aaron sharing duties in the middle and ‘Pipes’ in shooting position on the attack. Apart from a period where the ‘wheels fell off’, the team played a good game in sharing the ball around (apart from the Finnigans) to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Mal (Ironman) played his 2nd lacrosse game ever and his cardio was great as he chased down opponents and looks promising to improve his skills at training this week when he’s not playing ‘Groundskeeper Willie’.
Paddy Mac was all ‘geared up’ for a great game…well apart from his choice of shoes as he took to the field in Converse runners!
Not having ‘ANY’ grip at all was a major problem as he glided around the field and potentially represent Aust in the next Mens figure skating comp.
Big thanks to Faz who cracked out his long pole and was another valuable player to make an effort to travel to Bendigo.
For the past 3 years + Malvern has always fielded a team to make an effort to head to Bendigo as a courtesy when they have the difficulty of playing Melbourne based teams every 2nd week.
For that…I thank you!

Father son Combo’s
Thomas and Stephen Bown
Mitchell and Mal Reid

B Grade Women – Bye

Under 18 – Bye

U15 Won 10-3 V Footscray

Under 15s cam up against their second best challenge on Saturday to a strong Footscray team, but proved resilient. Tom Bown starting in goals meant that Aaron, Mitch and Ryan were sharing face-offs and running duties for the first half, all providing great possessions and scoring opportunities. Ginge, Harry and Loch along with the short sticks were great in D, keeping shooting to a minimum. Pipes,as per usual (that’s why we call him Pipes) was hard at it, laying the body on more than one occasion. Big Sammy in Goals made some big saves in the second half keeping Footscray to a minimum.
All of the players contributed in a big way for this win with a special thanks to our under 13 boys.

U13 Won 14-9 V Williamstown Cities

Ryan was unbeatable in face off with plenty of back up.
Loc and Ryan were a dynamic force in goals, along with Garrett, made some great plays.
Loc 6g 4a, Ryan 4g 4a, Garrett 2g 1a and Wilko after making some great saves in the 1st half as keeper, scored a goal in the 2nd. Justin taking over doing a great job too.
Everyone played hard for the ball with some great plays along the way.
Thanks to Meg for filling, in the girls also had a great game Meg with an assist and lots of running and Paige scoring a goal along with Brooke with and assist.
Next week the team are playing Willy Fearon at Willy. It would be great to see a few of the #redandblack make the trip and support the team.

U11 Black Won 18-3 V Eltham Black

Under 11s played out at Sunny Eltham early on Saturday Morning and walked away with a 18-3 Victory. A great display of teamwork and skill was evident against a younger Eltham team. It was great to see such a spread of goals amongst the team.
Special thanks to Will for coaching the team for the day and grabbing the uniforms from the town hall before hand and Steve Fisher for dusting off the umpiring shirt.

Under 11 Red Won 8-2 V Footscray

The U11 reds headed to Footscray knowing the whole team is more than capable of making a contribution to the game.
Our gut runners set the tone, with James Suffolk, James Arnold and Liam Barnes moving the ball all over the ground and winning ground balls.
James Gibbs was in goals for the first half and denied Footscray a score, and with significant contributions from Danielle Mitchell and the brother / sister combination of Ben and Bella Korolik, we took a 5-0 lead into half time.
James Arnold jumped into goals, and into the third quarter Josh Ive, Jerome Hicks and the half injured Will Rice started to influence their presence on the game touching the ball plenty of times.
During the third quarter Footscray snuck in a couple of cheeky goals and we hit the goal keeper plenty of times.
In the last quarter the ship was steadied, with Riley Suffolk starting to find his feet in lacrosse and closer to his first goal.
A great morning, 8-2 the result.

U13 Girls Won 9-3 V Williamstown

The U/13 girls came up against Williamstown Gold this week who were placed just below us on the ladder in second position.
Our skills weren’t quite up to our usual standards this week and it showed on the field with poor passing resulting in a lot of turnovers. To the teams credit they identified this issue and stepped up in other areas such as shooting and our defence was exceptional.
We got the jump on Williamstown early and maintained the lead all game resulting in a 9-3 victory.
Lots of great things came from the game, Brooke Reids defence was awesome and she was clearly best on ground for me this week, Victoria and Brianna’s progress every week is so pleasing to watch from a coaching perspective, and to watch the girls put the things we do at training into practice during games makes it a pleasure, Megs roll dodges and Paige’s shooting like we had been practicing for the past couple of weeks was fantastic. Jenna scored late and when she learns to be confident in her abilities she will be unstoppable, We need to use Jacinta more as our left handed secret weapon, but we are still working on getting her on the right side of goal and the girls getting their passes up to her left which will make her life easier!
Sarah and Emma look like seasoned professionals and I often forget this is their second season! Quite amazing how much they have developed.
Lastly but certainly not least our two boys that play for the U13 girls team so our girls can have a team to play in this season. James Suffolk who comes to home games straight after his swimming and having already played a game on Saturday for either the U11’s or U13’s, at ten years old he not only does he have great Lacrosse skills he is the kind of person we will want around Malvern for many years to come, a fantastic club person playing wherever he is needed.
Our Goalkeeper Lochie copped some flack from an ugly Williamstown parent this week for playing ‘girls lacrosse’. Lochie stepped up last year to play in goals when none of the girls in the team were confident enough to be the goalie. This adult put on a disgusting display of sexist discrimination straight out of the 1950’s, that as a parent and coach made me eternally grateful that Malvern are a club that fosters team spirit and clubmanship above all else, our boys help out our girls and our girls do the same for our boys teams, this is what makes us a strong club that will maintain camaraderie and friendships for life.
Thank you Lochie for being a part of our team and using your playing experience to be a leader on the field for the less experienced players.
We have Camberwell this week at Home, the Bowns last game for a few weeks before we head over to America to watch more Lacrosse!!
