State League Grand Final
Match Reports
State League
In the last home and away game of the season. Williamstown 11 Malvern 4
Division 1
Div 1 were the last game of the day on Saturday starting at 3pm. Being a warmer day than usual, plenty of water was the key to get through what was destined to be a tough game against the younger team of Moreland. Being a few players down we had a bench of 3, not ideal in a finals campaign but using our smarts instead of trying to go ‘run & gun’ was the game plan. Getting the ball from the centre most times was always going to be a bonus with Cam and Squeak controlling that area. Defense was at their usual best with Jay steadying the ship with direction to his defenders and making sure that the right ‘match ups’ were designated on Morelands main drives through offense. Getting down to the last quarter and having a handy buffer, Moreland came out to push our attack. Some great work from offense as they moved the ball and themselves to hold off a last ditch attempt by the opposition and secured another week playing for the red and black. Note: There was a flashback to the 80’s seeing a senior player take on 2 young defenders and still come away trumps with the ball, much to their frustration as ‘Birdman’s’ silky skills came out for all the crowd to enjoy. ; ) A game plan as we carried out will be key to beating Altona this Saturday. A team that works as a unit will overcome ‘individuality’…. #onemorestep
Division 3
Malvern 3 Williamstown 19 Well, we made the finals again only to be beaten by Williamstown again.
B Grade Women’s
Sunny Sunday against Surrey didn’t go quite as planned. Surrey grabbed a few quick goals early but the girls fought hard, going into half time 5-3 down wasn’t stopping the fight and determination. Finding some shade at half time have the girls the cooling down they needed to come back with a few quick unanswered goals to get back on track. Unfortunately even though we outscored them 4-3 in the second half it wasn’t quite enough, playing down to the wire and losing by just 1 goal. Picking the right spot and ground ball contests has been the biggest problem all year and let us down today. Despite being out of the finals it’s been a great year with the focus already on next year and where we need to improve. Thanks Rocket for all your time you have given us through the year, it’s always a pleasure and privilege having you as our coach. Thanks to our team manager Sandie, scoring and supplying much needed sugar hits at half time. Thank you Chris and Donna for umpiring for us, not the best job in the world and we really appreciate your time. Captain Sarah for your leadership and encouragement, and to all the girls on the team, another great year with lots of laughs and let’s take it one more step next year!!!

Malvern 11 – Footscray 8 This week we started our finals campaign against second placed Footscray. The boys got out to a fly start scoring 4 quick goals and confidence was high. Footscray hit back and the score was 4 – 3 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was a tough hard fought contest with both teams finding it hard to find the back of the net. It was even at 5 all at half time. Rupert had the big job of taking on Peter Kwas the powerful left hander who is their main goal scorer. Rupert and the defence was steadfast and held Kwas to 4 goals with all shots from outside. A really great effort. Mav laid a really solid body check to their face off guy and he went straight off and took no further part in the game. Both teams struggled with the defensive pressure, but our depth of goal shooters and superior skill was clearly evident. The boys started to take control and drew away in the second half to come away with a solid win. Goal scorers were Nic 5, Jordy 3, Rupert 2 and Mav 1. This week we have the rest, which I think will help to overcome the injuries and sickness which some boys have. Ben and Jordy hope you feel better soon. Our next game is the Grand Final on Sat Sept 14 at 10.45am at Chadstone. It would be great to see the whole club come and support the boys in their quest to be premiers and champions for 2013.

It was only the second time our boys had come up against the Willi team and the first time ended in a 6 all draw. The coach was probably more nervous than the team and it was a long trip out to Altona, but we made it there bright and early and the boys were warmed up and ready to go on a beautiful sunny Melbourne morning. We got off to a great start with Thom scoring the first goal of the day and taking the job of locking off their big kid and main scorer, he ended up with 5 for the game slowing him down on many of the centres to stop the Willi fast break game plan. All of our boys stepped up on the day playing the best game of their season when it mattered, kaileb and Mitch Reid were outstanding and showed just what an asset these new boys are to our team in crunch games. Third quarter saw a 9 all draw but the Malvern boys kept their heads (unlike some of the Willi boys who showed our team that costly penalties for not keeping your mouth shut can cost you a game). Special mention to Mitch Baker who was outstanding in goals but as predicted Malvern played a solid team game and that’s what got them over the line and earned them the week off this week. They will most likely face Willi again in the grand final and know what needs to be done! One more step boys.
