State League

Malvern 12 defeated Caulfield 8
Won 9 lost 1 for season

Caulfield have added some quality players since we played them in the first round and it was never going to be an easy game. A focus on our slow starts payed of with a better warm up and Patt and the midfield finding plenty of the ball with a 6 to 3 score at the half and could easily have been a bigger lead to the Red and Black.
We did get a bit loose in the third quarter and at one point Caulfield put on 3 unanswered goals to put us up by only 1 at the last break but to the guys credit they responded well and did what good teams do in tight games. Was great to see AJ, Garrett and Fish getting on the scoreboard and with Shane away now for 3 weeks a big test is ahead of us to revamp our attack structure to find a winning score, which we will do at practice this week.
Matty Arthur was rightly awarded the players belt and the D were OK apart from a few hiccups with man down that has now been sorted.
Chadstone this week and they will also be a much better unit than the one we beat earlier this year…..the 4 new Americans they have will be a handful for sure.

Malvern Defeated Melbourne Uni 16 to 3
With only 11 players Malvern played a faster Melb Uni team but without the experience and the older heads failed to find the back of the net as often.
Chappy did some great plays and high scored for Malvern Travis Dawson scored his 1st goal in lacrosse in the last quarter and quickly followed up with his 2nd goal of his career. All in all it was a pretty disciplined game by the players.

B Grade Women’s

In a rematch of Malvern’s 9-1 win in the first round, this time the Malvern mud unfortunately saw Williamstown defeat the women’s B-grade team in a mudslide 15-8 win for the visitors.
The game opened with five unanswered Williamstown goals before Leanne stopped their sixth and Romy and Phoebe gave the team a bit of hope with two successive goals. A lot of talk helped Malvern strengthen their defence until the end of the first half for a 4/6 half time result.

The second half quickly turned in Williamstown’s favour as they led by four about two minutes in. Their solid defence line stymied more than a few players going in to goal.

Some sneaky goals from Romy, Kate and Phoebe saw Malvern close to even with Williamstown, with Romy’s five goals earning her “man of the match”. In the end, Williamstown proved the better team on the day, closing the game with another five unanswered goals, notably one in the game’s final ten seconds!
