State League

Altona –  Win 21 to 6

The trip to Altona for State League on Saturday was one of not knowing what to expect as they have just got themselves back into State League after 2 or 3 years in Division 1, and we had no plans on how to play them as a team or not much information on any of their players either, that probably explains the slow start by both sides as a bit of a feeling put process that took place. The first quarter was pretty pedestrian with neither side being aggressive at the gage or defenders chasing out trying to press attack players in any way.

Our opening attack package of a 1.3.2 format was playing into their hands a bit as it became apparent they were going in and out of a six zone with clogging up the crease high on their agenda. Once we switched to a 2.2.2 pattern after quarter time it forced them to come out and play us on the corners with the crease open and we managed to get some great goals from feeds from behind the goals to cutters through a now open crease area. Travis Croll with 9 goals certainly enjoyed the open spaces in there and James Garret, Pat McGrath and Josh Naughton now all getting onto the scoreboard, at the half time break we were out to a 12 to 4 lead and had control of the game. The Final score of 21 to 6 included 14 goals that were assisted which is a great sign for the team.

We now sit 4 wins and 0 loses and for the first time at the club for a long while we deservedly command respect from all sides in the League, this Saturday against a very talented Caulfield outfit will be a big test for us, but with A.J. and Cam Scott back after injuries we will also be stronger and it should be a terrific contest.

What a great boost for the club as well that all three Senior teams won on Saturday, well done to all involved

Go Malvern.
