Malvern vs Surrey park.
Result – Won 9-8
Contested ground balls up, great motion, talk and sliding from Higgins, Faz, Croll, Harry Butler and Danny Mac in D, David Gal on fire in the net and for the first time in 2011 scoreboard pressure of 8 to 4 at the last change.
Our first 3 quarters were as good as we have played this year especially in defence against a top 2 team, all that terrific work almost went out the window with a 10 min mental fade away in the last quarter with some undisciplined fouls and going to the cage in attack when we needed to value the ball.
In every big game we play from here on in 2011, every player will have their “moment” to affect the result and need to make sure it is always a positive affect and builds the team and the Malvern players around them.
Great games by Anthony Jenkinson who we thought would best serve us on the day in the midfield and didn’t let us down, David Gal who did what David Gal does so well in the net including an unbelievable one on one save at 8 all with 2 mins left in the game, Nick Leguen 3 goals and 2 assists against his old side including the winner and Greg Higgins in the back half, he brings an energy and effort that is first class.
Surrey Park like Williamstown and Footscray before them seemed happy to let their bench get involved with the umpires and lose control of their game plan, this has been a direct result of us playing hard disciplined Lacrosse focusing on our plans and taking it right up to each of them, we are now in good place to put a string of wins together and after a well-earned break a meeting with M.C.C and a chance to set that record straight…….
Overall a huge breakthrough win for the club against a top 2 side and now a belief and attitude that we will continue to build on.
Division 2
Malvern vs Altona.
Result – Won 12-11
B Grade
Malvern vs Surrey Park.
Result – Loss 15-6
Back over the Westgate to Footscray to play a very strong Surrey Park Unit.
With Surrey having a number of experienced players in a team that could easily play in A grade it was always going to be a tough assignment. We also had the added impact of having a few players “under the weather” from a great night of socialising at the Alphabet party.
The final score was a 15 – 6 loss, but as usual the score line did not reflect the closeness of the contest or how hard Surrey was made to work.
It was Surrey’s experience and skills that made the difference but the Malvern girls battled hard all day and created many scoring opportunities and applied pressure to Surrey all over the ground.
The Defence of Leanne (goals), Jaimie and Jess forced Surrey into pressure shots on many occasions and our midfielders ran hard up and down the ground. Ang, Donna, Sarah (whose facial colouring changed many times throughout the game!!!), Rochelle and Maddy carried the ball well in transition, ran hard and applied pressure all over the ground. Maddy had a couple of great scoring opportunities and was unfortunate not to score.
Phoebe, Eleanor (3 goals) and Romy (2 goals) broke even in the centre and provided their usual run and carry all through the game. Unfortunately it was Phoebe’s last game as she heads back to the Country to resume her studies and she will certainly be missed.
Our rotating forwards Nina, Ally and Katie provided plenty of options when the ball was in attack and on many occasions controlled the ball whilst under heavy pressure.
The highlight of the game were 2 great runs by Katie Benson, both all the way from Defence into Attack resulting in 2 shots on goal, one of them successfully hitting the back of the net for her first goal in Senior Lacrosse. The roar from our strong supporter base as well as the team members was huge and had the Surrey players wondering what had happened!
It was another day of learning and gaining experience for the team who are showing great improvement every time we take the field. Our next win will not be far away!
Under 16’s
Malvern vs Williamstown Fearons.
Result – Loss 10-19
A real must win game against Footscray and missing shorty and Hugo made the match ups a lot tougher.
By the 1/4 time break it was 2 all with Joey and Hamish were running hard at both ends.
Footscray slipped away to a 3 goal lead at the long break. The 3rd 1/4 was pretty tight and our defence started to work together. Jones in goals was having a super day saving many shots from close in.
We now trailed 7-9 and looking like we would take the lead.
The final 1/4 was dominated by Footscray finishing off the game with a 4-1 score card.
Hamish and Joey ran the midfield all game and put in a very solid effort. Still more work needs to be done all over the ground to improve our production.
Dylan Hubbard finished with 3 goals, Hamish 2 goals. JOEY, Nick and Jordy 1 goal 1 assist. Gary a single assist.
Special thanks to Benny Chapman for starting in our line up.
Next game is sat 23rd July against the unbeatable Willy @ the Fearon ground. Its Willys family day.
Under 14’s
Malvern vs Eltham.
Result – Win 21-5
The families from both sides exchanged a pre-game chat. All the talk was about the start of the school holidays and school holidays means a couple of team members short as folks scatter around the country side for a bit of well earned rest and recreation. Toby is in Italy cycling around the Tuscan hills.
The playing surface at Eltham was fairly standard for this time of year – water logged.
Nick Chapman took the first face – off and with what is now becoming a trademark for this team, ran straight in from the starting whistle and scores.
The next one was much the same but with an assist thrown in to help the cause. This style – shock and awe tactics – is a type of play the boys like doing to unsettle their opponents. Darcy, (who is still out injured), is magnificent at it.
The back half was the old firm, Paz in the cage, Nick Maher, Luke Bucceri – who ran the ball out with trademark pace – and were well ground balled with stand in defender –Elliot. Alex typically played his cameo role in the net during the second half. Only a handful of goals ever get past this steely and purposeful defence.
Rupert provided a power of run on the mid-field and was well supported by Alex in the first half with others like Paul, Dillon and Jordan chipping in.
Jordan played his usual game as the General of the forward line and mustered Maddi, Caleb and Tom (who was up from the U12”s).
The final score was 22 to 5 with Chappo (3), Pauly (2) and Jordy (1) sharing the accolades within the context of a solid team effort. Gus has the boys humming along and whilst we have a two-week break for the holidays, there is plenty of improving to be had and training is still on Thursday nights.
A reminder that the Under 14’s day has been moved to Saturday July 16.
Contact Con on 0419 830587 to confirm your attendance. The kids can stay the night but should bring their own sleeping bag, pillow and mattress should they have one. Fishing off the Flinders’ pier on Sunday morning so bring a rod as well as your stick for a throw and your own contraband.
Under 12 Red’s
Malvern Red vs Moreland.
Result – Loss 3-19
The Reds had their 4th walkover win for the year on the weekend. However, we still managed to have a match by giving Moreland one player a quarter. We have to thank Ahbi, Sankalp, Parth and Freddy for playing a quarter each for Moreland.
This week we had Lachy playing for us from the Black team and he provided the team with some great leadership and running thru the midfield and was ably supported by Jenna, Paige, Meg and Frank.
Matthew, who was playing thru a sprained ankle provided an option in the attack line even though the ball was down the Moreland end of the field a fair bit. Ben, our trusted defender, did a great job staying tight, picking up ground balls, running the ball out of our defence and giving it to our midfielders.
Will and Ellie were two of our goalies for the day and did a great job withstanding the many shots they faced.
Goal scorers: Lachy 1goal, Ahbie 2 goals, Jenna 2 assists, Ellie 1 assist
Under 12 Black’s
Malvern Black vs Williamstown Fearons.
