Spit Roast Night – 21st May 2001

Coming up in 1 weeks – the 21st of May, is the first of our two spit roast nights for the year, if anyone can remember the mountains of food we have had on offer over the last 2 years, it is a night that cannot be missed. Tickets are only $10 and are available behind the bar, so if make sure you mark the date down in your diary and get your tickets by this weekend.
Barrow of Booze Esky raffle again this year
We are currently in the process of collecting donations for the Esky (formerly known as the barrow) of Booze, so if you are a senior player and haven’t yet made a donation to the Esky it would be greatly appreciated if you could. We will be raffling off the Esky, like last year, the winner will be announced at the last social function of the year, after the last game. So the sooner we are able to get the esky full, the sooner we are able to showcase it and sell some more tickets.
Past Players Day Saturday 4th June
State League will be playing Williamstown on Saturday 4th June and we have scheduled this as our past players day. As always it will be a great day and opportunity to catch up with your former teammates from years gone by. There will be junior games starting at 9.30am, 11.00am and a Div 2 game at 1.00pm prior to State League at 2.30pm. We would dearly love to see you and as many of our former players attend, so please make an effort to return for the day. Also if you can inform any other former players that you might keep in touch with as we may not have them on our database.
We will have the BBQ going and the fridge stocked. To plan a successful day, if you could please notify the club with an email or call so we can arrange for catering on the day.

Letter from the President
I wanted to update everyone with what has been happening at Malvern Lacrosse so far this season and our plans for the remainder of 2011. Our State League has been very competitive in their opening 3 games, but has yet to break through for a win. The list is very young with a few older experienced players so we have some international players from the US who will join us by the end of May. This will increase our depth, provide some scoring options and strengthen the club.
Division 2 have started well and are unbeaten after 3 rounds, including a one-goal win over last year’s premiers. We still have tests to come in the next few weeks when we play the other strong top-four clubs.
Division 3 has yet to run out this season, as we have not had the numbers for our first two scheduled games. We have not given up on entering a 3rd team, so if you or someone you know wants to play Div 3 and mentor our juniors who want to play up, please contact the club ASAP. A number of young Knox players have moved across into our junior program for the time being, playing in our U16, U18 and Div 2 sides; the aim is to support Knox through hosting their players with us, so their identity is maintained. For example, next Saturday Malvern Div 3 is scheduled to host Bendigo, which will double as the first round of the Bendigo-Knox annual challenge cup.
Under 18 have combined with Caulfield as both clubs did not have enough players to stand alone in this age group, although the Malvern U18 players include some high performers already making their mark at senior level as well. After 2 weeks they are 1&1.
Our Under 14 & 16 teams have easily won all their games; we have some great talent in these age groups, and we are on track to compete in finals. Keep an eye on these 2 teams as they contain kids who will become future State league players.
The Under 12 Blacks and Reds are a great bunch of kids made up of a mix of experienced kids with a group of new players to the club. I cannot encourage you enough to make it up to the Town Hall to see some junior games. Junior game times are 9.30am start for Under 12 & 14, 11.00am start for Under 16 & 18.
Malvern B Grade Women’s Team have entered and are playing on Sundays. The team is made up of a few of the Malvern girls who have previously played at other clubs, wives and girlfriends of current players and some of our junior girls who also play under 14 & 12 with the boys on Saturday. The girls have shown tremendous improvement each week and are not far away from a breakthrough win. Next Sunday Malvern will be hosting day of games at the Town Hall, including B Grade game vs Newport at 1:10 pm. Check the Sporting Pulse website for all fixtures and come along and support our new Women’s team through the 2011 season.
Yours in lacrosse,
Jeff Campbell
President

State League Report by – Glenn Meredith
Malvern Vs MCC.
Result – Loss 2 – 7
A huge loss to us in the context of our season, to contest so well after the first to 2 games against better opposition then to fall away last Saturday was disappointing to say the least, we had 26 unforced errors and while 43 shots on goal is a good number, the reality of scoring just 2 for the day makes our shot selection and overall shooting standard terrible. Our young attack continues to struggle to find a way to the net, but the great thing about sport is we get another crack at training this week and then Saturday against Caulfield to make it right.
Our defence wasn’t as dominating as the last 2 weeks and got a bit out of shape a couple of times, but to hold them to 7 including 2 garbage ones at the end when we came to press the ball with 5 mins left is still keeping us in games this year, funny thing is that was the part of our game l thought most at risk at the start of the year.
Melbourne were great on Saturday and showed us how to contest all over the ground and simply put wanted it more than us, we have injuries yes, but our lack of effort and skill errors in the attack half are hurting us badly.
Listening to them and their supporters sing their club song on “our home ground” after the game should resinate in every players ears for the rest of the season.
Division 2
Malvern Vs Chadstone.
Result – Won 13 – 4
Division 3
Malvern Vs Moreland.
Result – Walkover
B Grade
Malvern BYE.
Under 18’s
Malvern-Caulfield BYE (7th May)
Malvern-Caulfield Vs Footscray. (30th April)
Result – Loss 12 – 5
The Malvern-Caulfield under-18’s fell 12-5 to the visiting Footscray club. Malvern -Caulfield played the first two quarters with only 8 players on the ground and Footscray took advantage of this, scoring 7 of their goals in the first half. The Malvern-Caulfield club was able to field a full squad in the second half and the result was a much stronger offensive effort. The side was helped by strong performances by Luca Lettieri, James Faull, and James Butler.
Under 16’s
Malvern-Caulfield Vs Northcote. (7th May)
Result – Won 18 – 4
First game for the year and it showed early, but half way through the 1st quarter the stick work improved along with their memory on how to play.
Having 3 Caulfield players really helped. Darian Jones (goalie) Bruno Lombardo (Midi) and Gary Fleming (Attack) these guys now give us extra flexibility.
Joey Blakeney had his eye in all day scoring 7 Goals 1 Assist. Dillan Hubbard was very busy scoring 5 and 5, Nick Chapman cut and weaved his way through Northcote defence to pick up 4 Goals.
Darcy Campbell 1 Goal, Gary Fleming 1 and 1 and Jordy Campbell 2 Assists.
Malvern-Caulfield Vs MHS 2. (30th April)
Result – Won 34 – 0
First home game for the season, new field, sunshine, playing against a new inexperienced side gave us a great opportunity to cover all aspects of the game.
Darcy won all the faceoffs scoring 6 and 4, Joe 5 and 7.
our main feeder Michael 5 and 5, Nic cut his way to 6 goals and with clean finishing off work Jordy picked up 3 goals.
Hamish worked up and down field and ended up with 2 and 1, Rupert scored 2 goals, Gary 4 goals. our goalkeeper Darian 1 goal.
Under 12 Red’s
Malvern Vs MCC.
Malvern Reds Vs Williamstown Ferons. Result – Loss 3 – 5
Malvern Reds Vs Williamstown Cities. Result – Loss 3 – 11
In our first game against Williamstown Fearons, Malvern were dwarfed by a team that would not have looked out of place on an u/14 field. That didn’t stop any of our kids from trying their hearts out in a 3-5 loss. Lewis played his first game in goals and Elly, Ben and Ashley ran it out in the midfield.
The second game saw a smaller Williamstown team come to play. This time Jenna was in goals, Frank played attack/defence and Nathan shut down their biggest player in D. After all the great efforts Malvern went down to Williamstown Cities 3-11
Under 12 Black’s
Malvern Blacks Vs Williamstown Cities. Result – Loss 4 – 9
Malvern Blacks Vs Williamstown Ferons. Result – Loss 6 – 9
