Game Day Reports

Women’s B Grade

Report from 1st Game

The Malvern Women made their debut in the B Grade competition last Sunday on a fine and sunny day at Altona.

Most players arrived early loaded with nerves in anticipation of venturing into the unknown! Both Gear and Uniforms were frantically being searched for which took their minds off what was to come.

Warm Ups went well and then for the first time players were given positions for the start of the game which unfortunately added to the confusion.

13 players took the field of which Romy and Eleanor were our only currently registered players, Jenni Minniece and Jaimie Jenkinson were making comebacks after more than 10 years away from the game, Ally Campbell and Maddy Croll were making the transition from the Under 12 Boys competition and we had the following debutants – Sarah Bown, Julie Croll, Leanne Currie, Katie Benson, Jess Noakes, Angela Camenzuli and Donna Kelly.

Leanne Currie volunteered to be the team goalie and after being warmed up by husband Brad and facing her team mates in the warm up drills started the game with some brilliant saves. Realising “the ball doesn’t hurt” (till tomorrow!), Leanne had a sensational game in goals making double figure saves and kept the team in the game.

It was a tough day for the midfielders having to do plenty of running up and down the ground and our 3 subs were constantly rotating.

Elly Campbell had a great game playing mainly on the forward line and had plenty of possession against generally bigger opponents. Julie and Jess did a great job in defence, with Romy and Eleanor taking the centres. Angela and Sarah worked hard through the midfield along with Donna, Maddy and Katie whilst Jaimie and Jenni didn’t take long to rediscover their skills (from years ago!).

Whilst the team went down 4 – 3 to Melbourne University, everyone tried hard and contributed and will be much better for the experience. A couple of the highlights were Jenni’s backward somersault (with a 2 and 1/2 pike) and Sarah Bown developing a frequent relationship with the Umpires!

Hopefully the team will learn a lot from their first game and we can continue to work on skills and game knowledge (rules etc.) during training. So far training has consisted of basic skills with very little time able to be devoted to game situations but the improvement to date has been substantial and the players attitudes and willingness to learn have been sensational, we can only improve.

It was also great to see the vast number of supporters who came (all the way out to Altona) to cheer on our girls in their first game. The cheers and applause during the game contributed to a great atmosphere and kept the girls going.

Looking forward to next week!
